Schraft tops field at Atlantic invitational

Janette Schraft won her sixth straight individual title and the Glenwood girls just missed out on the team title at the Atlantic Invitational Cross Country Meet at the Atlantic Golf and Country Club Thursday.

Schraft topped the field of more than 100 runners with a time of 18:04.72, five seconds better than runner up Peyton Pogge of Tri-Center.

Bishop Heelan was the girls team champion with 87 points. The Rams just missed top honors with 88 points.

The Rams’ Abby McIntyre joined Schraft in the top 10 with a sixth place finish time of 19:37.05.

Aubrey McIntyre (20th), Erin Schultz (24th) and Lacey Jackson (37th) rounded out Glenwood’s scoring.

The Glenwood boys were sixth in the 22-team boys field with a score of 166. Dallas Center-Grimes was the team champion with 70 points.

Treynor’s Jerry Jorgenson won top boys honors with a time of 16:10.08.

Sam McIntyre was the Rams’ top boys finisher, placing 22nd with a time of 17:37.26. Just 15 seconds separated McIntyre from the Rams’ other top three runners, Mason Parks (26th), Parson Convington (27th) and Tyler Huey (32nd). But fifth runner, Jacob Parks was 65th and sixth runner Gavin Arbogast was 100th.

“We ran really well one through four,” Peverill said. “There were some really good runners. But team wise, unfortunately (Nathan) Rohrberg was sick so that hurt us.”

Rohrberg, the Rams’ typical No. 5 runner,  was under the weather but still managed to run, placing 141st.
Jacob Parks, who placed 65th, did run a strong race, shaving 30 seconds off his time and helping boost the Rams’ position.

“He really stepped it up,” Peverill said of Parks. “It wasn’t enough to catch up to that top group but it was  good meet for him.”

The Rams head to the Hawkeye 10 Conference meet in Creston Thursday.

Peverill said he feels like his team is ready in what the coach feels is a two team race between his squad and Council Bluffs Lewis Central. Glenwood has won the previous two conference meets.

“It’s going to come down to one or two points,” Peverill said. “Hopefully Nathan will be ready to go. Their top three is as good as our top four. We just have to make sure we match up well in that first four and we’re healthy. It’s going to be close.”
