Special Election Set To Fill Vacancy On Hastings City Council

Mills County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections Amber Farnan announced last week that a special election will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 1, to fill a vacancy on the Hastings City Council.

Katie Dodge, Election Deputy in the Mills County Auditor’s Office, said the special election is needed because proper protocol wasn’t followed in adminstering the oath of office to the person elected to occupy the seat in last November’s city election.

“Terry Rasco did not take his oath of office until this month, and we were only informed of this last week,” said Dodge. “Oath of offices need to be taken within a prescribed time outlined in Iowa Code.”

Persons interested in running for the open seat on the City of Hastings City Council can pick up and turn in nomination papers at the Mills County Auditor’s Office, located on the main floor of the Mills County Courthouse in Glenwood. Interested candidates will need to complete an Affidavit of Candidacy and collect at least 10 valid signatures on nomination petitions.

Nomination papers can also be found at the Iowa Secretary of State’s website.

The filing period is open until 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 7.

Voters can request an Absentee Ballot Request Form now in order to have a ballot mailed to them. Voters can obtain or request this form in person from the auditor’s office, over the phone at 712-527-3146 or on the county website.
