Rams score first win of season

Glenwood used a 17-2 second quarter run to pull away for a  62-48 victory over Creston in a Hawkeye 10 Conference girls basketball home game Friday.

After dropping their first two games to open the season, the Rams (1-2 overall, 1-0 in the conference) trailed 15-9 after a quarter before their second quarter run put them ahead 26-17 at halftime.

“A great defensive effort in the second quarter allowed us to take the lead going into half time,” said Glenwood coach Katy Bowen.

Glenwood out-scored the Panthers 22-13 in the third quarter and won going away.

Brooklyn Taylor paced a balanced Glenwood scoring effort with 15 points. Brielle Smith, Elle Scarborough and Joslyn Lewis added 10 points each.

Brielle Baker led Creston with 17 points.

Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln used a 19-1 third quarter run to pull away from the Glenwood girls in a 59-35 non-conference victory last Tuesday.

The Lynx appeared poised to blow the Rams out following the opening tip, going on a 23-5 run in the first quarter. Glenwood, however, would center itself and respond with a 22-6 over the next quarter and a half to cut the lead to 29-27.

But that is as close as the Rams would get.

The Lynx went on their run – out-scoring Glenwood 30-11 over the final two quarters – to ice the win.

“I felt that the second quarter showed the potential that we have this year,” said Glenwood coach Katy Bowen. “We’ve got to find a way to play more under control, be ready to start games and be more consistent.”
In that second quarter, in which they out-scored the Lynx 20-9, Glenwood had four two-points field goals and eight three-point field goals.

“That is pretty unusual,” Bowen said. “It was good to get our shots falling from the outside, but we need to be more aggressive getting to the rim. We also had all players who played major minutes score, so I think that scoring balance will be helpful when we can get more consistent effort throughout the whole game.”

Sidney Lucy led the Rams with 11 points. Brielle Smith added six and Elle Scarborough and Nikki Schuppan added five points each.
