Rams fourth at West Des Moines Valley tourney

Colin White won the heavyweight class and four other Glenwood wrestlers finished in the top three as the Rams placed fourth at the West Des Moines Valley Invitational on Saturday.

Host Valley was the team champion with 225 points, followed by Indianola (203) and Sioux City North (161).

“We had an outstanding first round and we only lost three matches. The second round was the complete opposite and we only won three matches. We need to work on our consistency,” said Dyer. “We can’t be a yo-yo team and expect to be in the final two.

“Overall I thought we performed well. We had some matches that we came out pretty flat and it cost us. If we come out and perform at our best we really could have done well.”

White scored nine points the final 30 seconds of his 285 pounds finals match to force overtime before winning.

“He moved really well towards the end and got the points he needed to take it to overtime. He came through and won,” said Glenwood coach Matt Dyer.

AJ Clark was second at 103 pounds in what Dyer called a “solid performance” earning a runner up finish for the second week in a row.

Nate Harms (112 pounds) and Andrew Reinert (189 pounds) did a great job coming back and placing third in their classes.

“Andrew has done a great job over the past few weeks working on a skill set. It is starting to show and pay off,” said Dyer.

Glenwood 189-pounder Joey Bryan pinned the No. 5 ranked wrestler in the semifinals but fell in the finals.

“Joey looks like a total different wrestler than last year. I am really proud on how hard his is working,” said Dyer.

Rams sweep

Shenandoah, A.L.

The Glenwood wrestling team swept a pair of duals against Shenanadoah and Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln on Thursday.

The Rams knocked off Abraham Lincoln 45-22 behind wins by Nick Harms, Steve Gutschenritter, Tyler Maxwell, Walker Langel, Nick Uphoff, Joey Bryan, Joe Blankenship and Colin White.

“I thought we came out a little stale against A.L.,” said Glenwood coach Matt Dyer. “The dual wasn’t running on time and the officials had some problems with the head tables so it caused some problems.

“It was a great learning lesson for our guys to control what they can. We can’t control officials, table help, and things like that, so we need to focus on things we can control like attitude and how prepared we are. We had a few guys out of the line up and I was proud how some of the other guys stepped up.”

Against the host Mustangs, Glenwood’s A.J. Clark, Harms, Dylan Hirt, Gutschenritter, Maxwell, Uphoff, Bryan, Andrew Reinert, Shawn Wiser and White won their matches.

“Against Shenandoah we came out more aggressive,” said Dyer. “There were a lot of open weights in both duals so we were able to get some new bodies out in the line up. We need to get healthy over break so we have our strongest line up for January. We still have two weeks of wrestling we need to get by and we might struggle with guys in and out of the line-up.”
