Rams first, second at Hawkeye 10 meet

For one team, it was another step, another accomplishment in a season that has been filled with them.

For another team, a long streak ended without a trophy.

It was a range of emotions for the boys and girls Glenwood track teams following the Hawkeye-10 conference meet. The girls, who have had a dominant season that has seen many wins, walked away as conference champions.

The boys, on the other hand, left the track as non-champions for the first time in six years.
The Rams finished second behind Lewis Central, who Glenwood defeated at the Ram Relays earlier in the season.

“It stings,” head coach Mark Starner said. “These streaks are meant to be broken. We might not have been at full strength but we had every opportunity to win.”

For the girls team, they left Clarinda as champions for the third straight year.

“This senior class is very talented,” head coach Cory Faust said. “I’m sop happy for the girls.”
Glenwood won even though they didn’t have one of their best runners, Miranda Ruth, after she went down with an injury.

Faust said they expect Ruth to be ready for Districts on Thursday.

It has been a long time since the Glenwood boys did not win the Hawkeye-10 conference title, but in a year that the Rams have battled injuries and the end of a home meet win streak, the narrative made sense.

“It’s been frustrating,” Starner said. “Not for me but for the kids. I know they’re frustrated too.”

Despite not winning, Glenwood did come in a close second to Lewis Central and had some solid results.

Starner said Glenwood places in a lot of events, even though they don’t necessarily win many events.

The shuttle hurdle relay team of Blaine Clark, Austin Tye, Caleb Petersen and Carter Von Essen won in a time of 59.91.

The distance medley team of Reagan McFarlin, Nate Nebel, Nathan Kennedy and Andrew Blum won in 3:41.68.

The Glenwood girls team has had a dominant season so far, and because of big wins from a group of girls that are used to winning medals, Glenwood walked away as conference champions again.

Kaycee Clark had a great night, winning the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash with times of 13.16 and 27.23 respectively.

Molly Dean has gotten used to winning as well, and that didn’t stop in Clarinda when she won the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.11

Dean also won in her signature event, the 100-meter hurdles, winning with a time of 15.83.
For good measure Dean took home the win in the 400-meter hurdles as well, winning by almost four seconds with a time of 1:04.80.

It was another familiar face that helped Glenwood in the field events. Linnaea Konfrst won the discus with a throw of 128 feet, and the shot put with a throw of 40 feet, 10 inches.
