Knights complete rare Corner ‘four-peat’

TABOR - Four-peat?

The Fremont-Mills boys track team are indeed winners of their fourth straight Corner Conference title with the victory on its home track in Tabor last Tuesday.

The Knights won six events and placed in the top three in 11 other events to rack up 158 points. Sidney was the runner up with 122 points.

“This was by far the toughest of the four,” said Fremont-Mills boys coach Mike Wood.

The Fremont-Mills girls team placed second to Sidney, 163 to 155 in the team scores. The conference title was the Cowgirls’ fourth straight also.

East Mills’ Janette Schraft won all four events she entered, taking home gold in the 400-meter hurdles, the 800, 1500 and 3,000 to help the Wolverines to a third place finish.  Schraft set a new conference record in the 3,000 with a time of 10:45.50.

The Fremont-Mills boys used its depth to pull away for the team title.

The Knights won the 4x200, 4x400 and shuttle hurdle relays and finished second in the 4x800 and distance medley relays.

“We were all very excited about the victory, on paper we figured to be down 18 points to Sidney at the end of the meet,” Wood said. “Our field events scored us more points than we had figured.”

Connor Alley’s gold medals in both the shot and discus were huge, Wood said, but key points from Mathew Kirchert (second in the shot), Cooper Langfelt (sixth in the discus), Vanatta (second in the high jump) and Powers (second in the long jump) were the difference.

Vanatta also picked up a gold medal in the 400-meters.

The East Mills boys were fourth at the conference meet with 83 points.

“Our goal was to finish third or fourth,” said East Mills coach Claude Lang. “And we did that. The team really competed well, everyone was trying to earn higher places to score more points for the team.”

The Wolverines’ Dylan Schroeder won the team’s lone gold medal, taking home top honors in the 110-meter hurdles. Teammate Chris Darnold added a third place medal in the hurdles.

Schroeder added a third place medal in the long jump and ran the anchor leg on the shuttle hurdle relay team that placed second.

Trevor Glockel set a pair of personal-bests placed fourth in the discus and fifth in the shot put.
East Mills’ 4x100-meter and 4x200-meter relays both finished second.

The Fremont-Mills girls scored 68 of their 155 points in the four field events. They nearly swept the field with Sophie Phillips (shot put), Kendra Fichter (discus) and Kenna Howard (high jump) all taking home gold. Clara Schaaf was second in the long jump.

Schaaf added a third place showing in the 100-meter dash.
