Historic cemetery walk Sunday in Glenwood

Local residents will have an opportunity to learn about some of Glenwood’s original movers and shakers at a special program taking place this Sunday at the Glenwood Cemetery.

The Glenwood Public Library and Mills County Historical Museum are teaming up to present what’s believed to be the community’s first cemetery walk. The unique event is a fundraiser for the library and museum and will feature costumed actors portraying some of Glenwood’s most influential citizens of the late 1800s and early 20th Century.

Danette Hein-Snider will be portraying Lillian Robinson Mogridge (1857-1924) and her husband Ridgeway will be portraying Lillian’s husband, Dr. George Mogridge who was superintendent of the Institution For Feeble-Minded Children.

John Yates will be portraying Joseph B. LaChapelle (1860-1927), a newspaperman. He worked for the Omaha Bee, Omaha World-Herald and Mills County Journal before buying it in 1885.

Judith Oldham will be Lucy Prior Allyn (1838-1911), a teacher at  Western Iowa Collegiate Institute and the Glenwood Soldiers’ Orphans Home.

Gregg Harless will be Herbert A. French (1871-1937) who worked at the  Mills County National Bank for 40 years and served as mayor.

Stan Sibley will be John Y. Stone (1843-1928), a 2nd Lieutenant on Company F, Iowa Infantry during the Civil War. When he returned from the war, he entered into a partnership with P.T. Ballard in the ownership of Our Opinion, later the Glenwood Opinion, which he edited for two years. He was later an attorney and elected to the Iowa House of Representatives and was also elected Attorney General of Iowa.

The walk begins at 2 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 students.
