Glenwood punches ticket to state tennis

Neither the weather nor Clarke-Osceola could stop Glenwood in Saturday’s Class 1A Girls State Tennis Quarterfinals in Atlantic.

The Rams earned a 5-1 victory to secure a spot in the state semifinals. The Rams were to meet Waverly-Shell Rock on Tuesday in Boone. Those results were not available at press time.

According to Glenwood coach Callie Ohm, this is the Rams’ first trip to state.
“The weather wasn’t ideal,” Ohm said. “It rained on us twice while the girls were playing. They pushed through and didn’t let it bother them. I am so happy about the way they have been competing. It was amazing feeling to get that banner.”
The Rams’ Brooklyn Taylor improved to 17-0 on the season with her win at No. 2 singles.

Glenwood No. 2 singles player Ellie Osterloh lost a tough 6-4 opener but rallied for the win.

Earlier in the week, Osterloh and the doubles tandem of Brooklyn Taylor and Erin Stanley punched their tickets to the state singles and doubles tournament in the Class 1A Regionals at Red Oak.

Shenandoah’s Sarah Wood won the singles title beating Osterloh 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 in the finals.

In doubles, Shenandoah’s Marilyn Cepeda and Nichole Gilbert downed the Rams’ duo of Taylor and Stanley 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. The top two individuals advance to state.

Taylor wins singles, Rams’ third at H-10

Brooklyn Taylor cruised to the No. 2 singles title and the Glenwood girls placed third as a team at the Hawkeye 10 Conference Tennis Tournament the Koch Tennis Center in Omaha last Monday.

Shenandoah edged Denison 26 to 25 in the point standings to win the team title. The Rams scored 19 points and tied with Red Oak for third place.

The Rams’ Taylor knocked off Atlantic’s Carly Westphalen and Harlan’s Nicole Lange to reach the No. 1 singles finals. In the championship match, Taylor downed second seeded Nichole Gilbert 8-6 for her first conference title.

Denison’s Jacque Ingram won the No. 1 single title with an 8-2 win over Shenandoah’s Sarah Wood. The Rams’ Ellie Osterloh defeated Red Oak’s Macy Baker in the opening round before falling 8-1 to Ingram in the semifinals. Osterloh then lost in the third place match to Council Bluffs Lewis Central’s Josie Shudak to finish fourth.

In doubles, the Ram No. 1 Ram duo of Ruby Crow and Erin Stanley won their opening round match but then lost in the quarterfinals to Clarinda’s Maddie Hartley and Brooke Brown. Crow and Stanley would bounce back to defeat the Creston tandem of Mattie Wheeler and Madison Calloway a second time to finish seventh.

In the No. 2 doubles bracket, No. 3 seeded Brielle Smith and Sierra Stouder lost to Lewis Central’s Hannah Moen and Natalie Driver in the opening round. But the Ram pair battled through the loser bracket to place fifth.
