Glenwood Man, 61, Faces Charges After Standoff With Police

A 61-year-old Glenwood man is facing multiple charges following a standoff with law enforcement officers Tuesday night, March 8.

Around 6:30 p.m., Glenwood Police officers responded to a call about a domestic disturbance involving an armed man at 914 Green St.

The victim inside the residence was able to escape and then informed  police officers that the man inside, later identified as Thomas Sawyer, had firearms and one was loaded.

Following an hour-long standoff,  officers were able to get Sawyer to come out of the residence.
Glenwood police chief Eric Johansen said officer Matthew Sewing utilized a siren and air horn to persuade Sawyer to exit the residence. Sewing then engaged Sawyer in dialogue while other officers on the scene positioned themselves to approach the suspect.

Johansen said Sgt. Pat Martin made the initial physical contact with Sawyer, who was quickly subdued and taken into custody by officers after a brief struggle. Law enforcement officers from the Mills County Sheriff’s Office, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Tabor Police, Fremont County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa State Patrol assisted Glenwood Police at the scene.

Sawyer is charged with domestic assault while displaying a dangerous weapon, intimidation with a dangerous weapon and interference with official acts. As of Tuesday morning, Sawyer was still being held in the Mills County Jail.
