Glenwood golfers fifth at Class 3A regionals
The Glenwood girls placed fifth in the Class 3A Girls Golf, Region 2 state qualifier at River Valley Golf Course in Adel Monday.
Creston shot a 341 to win the sectional title. Centerville was the runner up with a 371. Both punched their tickets to this week’s state golf meet at the Coldwater Golf Links in Ames.
Two-time defending champion Atlantic was third with a round of 382.
The Panthers had the top two individual finishers in champion Rylie Driskell and runner up Sophia Groumoutis, who both shots 81s. The top nine individual finishers advance to state.
Glenwood shot a team round of 433 for fifth place.
Glenwood coach Maria Jacobus was happy with her team’s performance, considering the course conditions had scores up across the board.
“Adel received a lot of rain over the weekend and the course does not drain well,” Jacobus said. “There were numerous swampy areas, including a few tee boxes and we just didn’t get a lot of roll off our hits. With the humidity and changing temps throughout the day, green speeds fluctuated from morning to afternoon, which added another layer to our course management.”
Freshman Sophie Benson led Glenwood with a round of 104.
“It’s always great when underclassmen step up and play well under pressure,” Jacobus said. “As a freshman, Sophie has handled the pressure of varsity and our tournaments with a lot of poise and maturity. Along with the other players returning next year, 2019 should be another fun year for us.”
Ellie Brown and Garret Reich each carded a 108 and Kathryn Gunderson a 113 to cap the Rams’ scoring.
“Generally, scores were higher for most teams than they otherwise would have been, including ours,” Jacobus said. “However, I’m happy with our result and know that everything we’ve accomplished this year will serve as a great springboard for the 2019 season.”
