Glenwood girls win Atlantic Co-ed meet

The Glenwood girls won four events and took home the team title while the boys squad finished fourth at the Atlantic Co-ed Relays last Monday.

With 145 team points, the Glenwood girls easily out-scored the runner up Trojans’ 95 points. Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln was third with 70 points.

Glenwood girls coach Cory Faust said the wind was a big factor in Atlantic, with gusts topping 30 miles per hour throughout the meet but he was happy that his team stayed focused on the things they could control.

“There were a lot of really good efforts and times under the circumstances,” Faust said.
The Rams had another strong day in the relays, taking home gold in the distance medley, 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays and finishing second in the 4x800 and shuttle hurdle relays.

Faust thought Jaeda Wilson, who won gold in the 400-meters and ran legs on both the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays, had an “outstanding” meet. The coach also commended the strong splits by Elle Scarborough and Abby McIntyre in the distance medley relay and the anchor run of Danielle Hardcastle that brought the Rams back from sixth place to second in the 4x800-meter relay.

Sydney Biermann picked up a pair of medals in the field events, placing second in the shot and third in the discus.

“Our seniors deserve a lot of credit for setting an example for the level of excellence on this team in practices and meets,” Faust said. “Arianna Springer, Devon Bomer, Emily Todd, Grace Presley, Kate Kaufman Katelyn Malcom, Maddie Liddell and Savanna Mixan all make up an outstanding senior class with their performance on the track as well as their leadership.”  

On the boys side of the meet, the host Trojans dominated the field winning 10 events and scoring 134 points. Glenwood finished with 55 points for fourth.

With the windy conditions and with the Hawkeye 10 Meet scheduled at that time for three days later – the conference meet was ultimately re-scheduled for this last Monday – Starner decided to make some changes at Atlantic.

“We backed off or changed up some of the events for our athletes,” Starner said. “Just trying to switch up some things prior to the conference meet. The wind was extremely strong which really impacted overall times, but we explained to our kids that competing for a place was more important than our overall times.”

The Rams’ Kohen Watson had a hand in both of the Glenwood boys’ gold medals. He anchored the top time in the 400-meters and the anchor leg of the 4x400m relay along with Christian Stanislav, Jack Hughes and Brady Weddum. Watson passed two teams in the last 50 meters to bring home the gold.

Both Caleb Sanders and Dillon Wiser got back on track in their respective events, according to Starner. Both neared their season-bests. Sanders placed second in the discus with a top toss of 140 feet, nine inches and Wiser didn’t place in the shot but threw 47 feet, 3.5 inches.
