Glenwood gets a bounce back win

Coming of its first loss of the season, Glenwood bounced back to put together it’s “most complete” effort of the season in a 61-43 victory over Council Bluffs St. Albert Saturday.

“This felt like our most complete game,” said Glenwood coach Curt Schulte said. “Our defensive effort was tremendous. We only gave up 43, our help side defense was good and our communication was pretty solid also.”

The Rams (3-1 overall, 1-1 in the Hawkeye 10 Conference) also had three players in double-figures, with Ryan Blum leading the way with 15 points and Christian Stanislav adding 14 and Zach Carr 13.

Glenwood, coming off the tough 75-59 setback at Council Bluffs Lewis Central earlier in the week, started sluggish to open against the Falcons (3-1 overall, 1-1 in the conference) but warmed up in the second quarter – on both ends of the court.

The Rams turned a 10-7 lead after a quarter into a 33-20 halftime lead with a strong second frame.

“Our transition (game) got going in that second quarter,” Schulte said. “We got a lot of easy transition points, our tempo was really good and we executed in our halfcourt sets.”

Schulte said Tuesday’s loss served as good wake up reminder for his team.

“We had three pretty good practices leading up to St. Albert and our kids felt they needed to get better in certain areas and we focused on those areas in those three practices and it showed against St. Albert,” he said.

The Rams used their press to start the game, mixed in man-to-man defense and frequently switched up our defenses coming out of timeouts to confuse the Falcons.

After three quarters, the Rams allowed just 27 points.

Schulte said he knows his team has work to do but likes where they’re.

“We were pretty good on both ends of the floor tonight,” Schulte said. “We had pretty balanced scoring with three guys in double figures. That’s always good to see and tough to stop. This felt like our most complete game by far.”

Reed Miller led St. Albert with eight points.

Glenwood 59

Council Bluffs Lewis Central jumped out to a 20-8 lead, led by as many as 32 and cruised to 75-59 upset victory over Glenwood in boys basketball last Tuesday in Council Bluffs.

The Titans used a suffocating defensive effort and an impressive offensive night to score the most points on Glenwood since January of last season. They led 44-21 halftime lead and saw that lead balloon to 66-38 by the end of the third quarter.

Logan Jones paced the Titans with 18. Josh Simmons added 11 and Cole Jensen 10.

Christian Stanislav finished with 26 points to lead Glenwood. Ryan Blum added 14.
