Glenwood fourth at Ram Relays

Nate Kennedy set a blistering new school record in the 100-meters and the Glenwood track team placed fourth in the team standings at a loaded Ram Relays Thursday.

The Relays, which were moved to Thursday due to last week’s cold weather, added a handful of area teams to make the field one of the toughest in the early season.

Sergeant Bluff-Luton, one of the late additions, won six events and placed among the top two in five more events to finish with 137.5 points to win the team title. Atlantic was the runner up with 113 points, followed by third place Council Bluffs St. Albert’s 75 points and then Glenwood, who tied with Council Bluffs Lewis Central, for fourth with 71 points.

“This meet was loaded with talent,” said Glenwood coach Mark Starner.  “Everyone was just fighting for the opportunity to compete and teams were calling (activities director) Mr. (Jeff) Bissen wanting to get in.  Our main objective for every home meet is to win, but we don’t back down from inviting good teams.  We knew we just wanted to put up some good times against some great competition, so we altered our line up to try to improve some things instead of spreading individuals thin trying to score more team points.”

The Rams may not have factored in the team race but Kennedy’s blistering performance stood out. In the only individual event the senior ran on the night he clocked a 10.86 in the 100-meters. The time is a new Glenwood school record and the top time in the state so far this season.

“Breaking the school record in the 100-meter dash was not much of a surprise that he got it, but probably more shocking on how early in the season and under the circumstances of our spring weather,” Starner said. “Nate’s a competitor like many of our kids, but he really gets after it when he steps on the track.”

Kennedy also anchored the 4x200-meter team of Joey Saddler, Zach Vondra and Kohen Watson to a gold medal and the 4x100-meter relay team of Saddler, Jon Lee and Watson to a second place showing.

Christian Stanislav added a second place finish in the high jump with a top leap of five feet, 10 inches while the Rams’ shuttle hurdle relay team of Brenden Godbout, Cooper Silvius, Brian Krewson and Brady Weddum was third in 1:04.72.
