Glenwood falls on road at S.C. East

Sioux City East built a 7-1 lead after four innings to turn away Glenwood in a non-conference baseball Friday in Sioux City.

The Rams (11-8 overall, 9-6 in the conference) found themselves down 3-0 after an inning and 7-1 after four before trimming the lead to 7-5 with a four run fifth. But the Black Raiders responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame to extend their lead.

“We were flat,” said Glenwood coach Bret Elam. “We were dwelling on the Atlantic game and it showed. We have to do a better job of having a short term memory because we spent too much time licking our wounds when we should have been focused and ready to play. We just didn’t show up.”

Mavrick Decker, Cole Loeffelbein, Talon Stromgren, Nathan Nebel and Drake Harrington all recorded hits for Glenwood who was limited to five hits, but just one for extra-bases, in the loss.

Harrington took the loss on the hill after allowing four earned runs and nine hits in five innings of work.

Glenwood 10

Atlantic rallied for 10 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to complete the 11-10 comeback victory over Glenwood in Hawkeye 10 Conference baseball Thursday.

Leading 10-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Trojans staged the unlikely comeback after Glenwood coach Bret Elam decided to pull starter Wyatt Schulz and go to his bullpen. Schulz had thrown a gem, striking out seven and scattering four hits but the senior right-hander was at 95 pitches after six. With a 10-1 lead, the coach felt safe his team could close out the Trojans in the ninth.

But junior Aaron Bertini struggled on the mound in the seventh.

“He had a tough time getting the ball over, he gave up some walks, we booted three balls and the next thing you know they’ve scored 10,” Elam said. “We don’t have a lot of depth on this team but you feel safe with a 10 run lead in the seventh. We just didn’t get it done. We couldn’t finish. Anything bad that could happen, did happen.”

Bertini walked five, hit a batter and gave up three hits. The Ram also committed three errors in the inning leading to eight unearned runs.

“The first six innings we did everything right,” Elam said. “Wyatt pitched great and hindsight being 20/20 I wonder if we shouldn’t have kept him in but we have to be able to put teams away when we have a 10 run lead in the seventh. We have to keep focused.”

Mavrick Decker led the Rams at the plate with three hits and two runs driven in. Talon Stromgren and Kyle Murtfeld each recorded two hits.

Glenwood 10,
Clarinda 6

Glenwood plated six runs combined in the first two innings and held on late for a 10-6 victory over Clarinda in Hawkeye 10 Conference baseball last Tuesday.

The Rams recorded 13 hits in the win with six different batters recording at least two hits.

Kolton Wilwerding, Mavrick Decker, Cole Loeffelbein, Talon Stromgren, Wyatt Schulz and Zak Mumm each recorded two hits. Wilwerding doubled and drove in three runs. Stromgren and Schulz each knocked in two runs.

Mumm earned the win on the hill, scattering four hits and three earned runs while striking out three.

Glenwood sweeps Tigers

The Glenwood baseball team picked up Hawkeye 10 Conference sweep of Red Oak last Monday with a double-header sweep at Legion Park in Red Oak.

Glenwood won the first game 15-2 and the second 9-7.

In the first game, Glenwood scored seven runs in the third inning to take a 10-1 lead.

The Tigers tried to close the gap, but the Rams scored four more in the seventh to put the game out of reach.

The Rams’ Kyle Murtfeld went 3-for-3 in the game with a double, two walks and three runs scored. Nathan Nebel was 2-for-4 with three runs scored. Kolton Wilwerding also went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Game two was a much different story as Red Oak pitcher Carlos Guerra kept the Tigers close. The score was knotted at 3-3 through five innings.

Glenwood pushed three runs across in the sixth inning to take a 6-3 lead they’d never relinquish. The highlights for Glenwood in the sixth included an RBI triple by Aaron Bertini, to score Murtfield, as well as a squeeze bunt with two outs executed by Mavrick Decker to score Bertini.

Red Oak closed the gap in the bottom of the sixth, trimming the lead to 6-5, Dean Smith knocked in the first Tiger run thanks to a fielders choice error that scored courtesy runner Eli Guerra. Smith later scored on a passed ball during pinch hitter Isaac Bower’s at-bat.

The Rams pulled away for good in the seventh as Zak Mumm reached base to knock in two runs. Bertini followed up with an RBI groundout.

Bertini, Wilwerding and Murtfeld all had two-hit games to lead Glenwood. Murtfeld was 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored.
