Glenwood braves rain, mud for runner up finish in Atlantic course in runner up finish

ATLANTIC - On a cold, rainy evening on a muddy course in Atlantic, the Glenwood girls battled the elements and a stacked field of 17 other teams to take home second place at the Atlantic Cross Country Invitational Thursday.

In a steady downpour that made for such a muddy track several teams pulled out of the meet – including the Glenwood boys runners – the Rams showed a lot of fight even if the runner up finish to Class 3A No. 8 ranked Dallas Center-Grimes did snap their four meet win streak.

“Our girls really did tough it out and I’m extremely proud of their performances under the tough conditions,” Coach Jeff Janssen said. “Our mindset going into the meet is that we wanted to race and we wanted to compete against some of the best 3A teams in the state, and while we would have loved to have come away with the meet championship, we are just as thrilled to show how good we are and can be.”

Dallas Center-Grimes finished with 82 points to the Rams’ 84. The host Trojanns were third with 98 points.
Tri-Center’s Peyton Pogge was the individual girls champion.

All the times for the Rams’ runners were down due to weather conditions but Kate Kaufman ran great race, Janssen said. The senior finished in 12th place.

Lacey Jackson was 15th followed closely by Aubrey McIntyre in 16th.

Janssen said the runner who stood out the most in Atlantic was Erin Schultz. Schultz had her best team and overall finish of the year coming in fourth for the team and 20th overall.

Katelyn Malcom finished 22nd and Lexi Hankins, in her first varsity race, was 23rd to round out the scoring. Abi Schultz added a 34th place finish.

The Rams’ Lauren Becker was the top finisher in the junior varsity race by 45 seconds.
