Every Quilt Has A Story To Tell At Hillsdale Church

More than 130 quilts were on display Saturday at Hillsdale United Methodist Church as part of a fundraiser that’s become a tradition at the rural Glenwood church.

“We have a quilt show every two years,” Barb Sell said. “We’ve been doing this about 20 years and interest just keeps growing.”

On Saturday, visitors from throughout southwest Iowa, including the communities of Red Oak and Shenandoah, stopped by the 60-year-old church to get an up-close look at the colorful creations on display.
Some of the quilts were made just in the past year, while others are cherished familypossessions - handed down one, two, three or four generations.

“One of the coolest things about this is that each quilt has a story,” Hillsdale Pastor Ken Demlow said. “A lot of time  and thought goes into each one.”

Demlow said the quilt show and the support it gets is just one example of the special bond Hillsdale families have with their church.

“One of the nice things is that it’s still a community church,” he said. “People in the area, in this community, really support the church.”

Saturday’s quilt show included a bake sale, luncheon and a mid-morning presentation on “Feed Sack Fabrics.”
