East Mills’ Schraft wins four medals at Drake Relays qualifiers

If the Drake Relays are any indication, Janette Schraft’s trophy shelf is likely to get a little more full.

The Wolverine junior who won a trio of gold medals at last year’s state track meet in the 800, 1,500 and 3,000-meters, medaled in all four events she qualified in at this year’s Drake Relays wrapping up Saturday in Des Moines.

Competing against the top runners in the state, Schraft placed fourth in the 800-meters on Thursday with a time of 2:15.50. On Friday, she ran a 10:24.48 to place seventh in the 3,000-meters

On Saturday, Schraft picked up a third place finish in the 400-meter hurdles after clocking a 1:03.18 and then added to her medal haul with a fourth place finish in the 1,500. Her time of 4:42.14 in the 1,500, like the other three events she placed in, was a personal-best.

Perhaps most remarkably was Schraft’s performance in the hurdles. The junior had never run the event prior to two weeks ago.

The Glenwood girls 4x100-meter relay team of Sadey Allgood, Devon Bomer, Jaeda Wilson and Elle Scarborough ran a season-best at Drake, finishing in 51.88 to place fifth in their heat.

“I think we can and will go faster yet these last three weeks of the season,” said Glenwood coach Cory Faust. “It is a nice accomplishment and experience to run at the Drake Relays, and the girls represented our team well.”

The Glenwood boys’ 4x100 team placed seventh at Drake. The lineup of Joey Saddler, Jon Lee, Cooper Silvius and Zach Vondra ran a 46.10.

The Rams’ 4x200-meter relay team of Saddler, Jack Hughes, Vondra and Kohen Watson finished with a time of 1:34.38 for 21st place.

Hughes and Watson teamed with Christian Stanislav and Kohen Watson to finish 21st in the 4x400-meter relay.

Glenwood was without the services of top sprinter Nate Kennedy who remained out with a hamstring injury, according to Glenwood coach Mark Starner.
