East Mills’ Schraft headed to state in four events

East Mills Janette Schraft and Fremont-Mills’ Clara Schaaf both punched their tickets to state in four events each at the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet in Tabor Thursday.

Schraft, a junior, won the 800-meters, 1,500-meters and the 400-meter hurdles but had to wait until Friday to learn her time of 11:05.58 in the 3,000-meters was good enough among those not securing automatic bids. Bedford’s Emma Lucas won the automatic berth with a time of 10:44.78.

In Class 1A, the district event winners earn automatic tickets to state with the remaining 14 bids coming from at-large spots among the top times and distances in the state not winning their district.

Schaaf took a similar route in all three of her individual state bids. The Fremont-Mills’ senior qualified in the long jump, 100-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles after not winning any event at the district meet. Schaaf did help lead the Knight shuttle hurdle relay team, along with Lydia Alley, McKayla Gartner  and Bailey Hauschild to a gold medal at districts.

Hauschild also picked up a top finish in the high jump and teammate Sophie Phillips won both the shot and the discus.
Kendra Fichter added to the Knights’ haul with at-large bids in both the shot and discus.

The Fremont-Mills girls won the district title with a score of 125 points. Southwest Valley was second with 69 points.

On the boys side, Fremont-Mils finished fifth with 62 points while East Mills was seventh with 46.

The Knights had two state qualifiers in James Switzer (400-meters) and Connor Alley (shot put).

East Mills’ Dylan Schroeder punched his ticket to state in the long jump with a top leap of 20 feet, 1.75 inches.

East Mills coach Claude Lang was confident with a top three finish and being over 20 feet, his senior long jumper would get in.

“We limited the amount of jumping he would do at the end of the season to avoid injuries,” Lang said.

Knights sweep own ‘Last Chance’ invite
In a final tune up for Thursday’s state qualifying meets, the Fremont-Mills girls and boys swept the team titles at the Last Chance Invitational Track Meet in Tabor last Monday.
The Knight boys out-paced runner up Sidney 119 to 98 in the team standings while the girls ran away from Southwest Valley by a final tally of 135 to 91.
The East Mills boys and girls both placed fourth at the meet.
Fremont-Mills got top performances from Mason Vanatta (100-meter dash), Tristan Vanatta (200-meter dash), Colton Hauschild (800-meter run) and from its 4x400, shuttle hurdle and sprint medley relays.
The Wolverine boys did not win an event but got runner up finishes from Nic Duysen (200-meter dash), Dylan Schroeder (110-meter hurdles), Michael Schafer (3,200-meters) and its 4x800 and shuttle hurdle relay teams.
On the girls side, the Knights won five events led by gold place finishes from Kendra Fichter in both the discus and shot put and Bailey Hauschild in the high jump. They added top times in the 4x100 and shuttle hurdle relays.
Janette Schraft paced East Mills with golds in the 400-meter dash, 1,500-meters, 3,200-meters and the 400-meter hurdles. The Wolverines distance medley relay also took home top honors.
