Duane H. Stone, 85, Glenwood

Duane H. Stone, age 85, of Glenwood, died Dec. 11, 2008, in Glenwood. Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 15, 2008, at Peterson Mortuary in Glenwood. Pastor Perry Perrett officiated. Interment was in the Glenwood Cemetery.

Mr. Stone was born Aug. 28, 1923, in Mills County to James Floyd and Mary Suffina (Andrews) Stone. He graduated from Glenwood High School in 1940 and enlisted into the U.S. Army on Feb. 19, 1941. He was then sent overseas to Ireland and Scotland for the invasion of North Africa. While he was there he was promoted to corporal and squad leader of a rifle squad. The unit went to Algeirs in North Africa on Nov. 8, 1942. They moved to Tunis in January 1943 as a unit. The Germans made a move toward the west. The unit was left high and dry at the front. On Feb. 17, he and his unit became POWs and spent the next 26 months in Germany after traveling from North Africa to Italy and onward to the camp located not far from Berlin in Germany. After his escape he returned to the U.S. in June of 1945. He was honorably discharged as a corporal on Aug. 31, 1945, after he had served for four and a half years of duty. In recent years, Mr. Stone was interviewed by Ollie North and was able to share his experiences.

Mr. Stone was united in marriage to Marjorie Mae Hammer on July 20, 1946, in Glenwood. To this union five children were born, Steven, Susan, Dennis, Kevin and Lisa. He was employed by the government as an administrative supply technician for the National Guard, and was a member from 1940-83. He was a member of the First Battalion 168th Infantry 34th Division Red Bull, First Christian Church, American Legion Post 141 and the Masonic Lodge.

Following his retirement, Mr. Stone was employed as a bus driver for Foster Grandparents, Head Start and Glenwood School District. He was a devoted family man and always enjoyed attending his children and grandchildren’s activities. He loved to work in his yard and feed the squirrels and birds. He was also a member of the Glenwood Men’s Bowling League for many years. He and his wife loved dancing and being with their family and friends.

Preceding Mr. Stone in death were his parents; brothers, Warren and Irwin Stone; sisters, Onice Stiles, Vera Andress, Anna Templeton-Clifford, Virgie McClain, Viva Knuppel and Lorraine Kruse. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marjorie Stone of Glenwood; children, Steven and wife Cathy Stone of Glenwood; Susan and husband Dennis Lincoln of Pacific Junction; Dennis and wife Linda Stone of Sewickley, Penn.; Kevin Stone; Lisa and husband Marty Stivers all of Glenwood; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
