C.B. St. Albert blanks Glenwood, 1-0

Sam Wilber’s goal in the 53rd minute broke a scoreless tie and carried Council Bluffs St. Albert to a 1-0 Hawkeye 10 Conference boys soccer victory over Glenwood Thursday in Council Bluffs.

The Rams (5-3) struggled with their attack against the Falcons’ defense, finishing with nine shots on goal.
Wilber’s goal came off an intercepted pass the freshman finished from 25 yards out.

“The boys are frustrated,” said Glenwood coach Cort Lovato. “They played themselves into multiple scoring opportunities from passing combinations. We had a hard time finishing again. We know what we need to work on and will get at it the next training sessions.”

Brady Fritts had 12 stops in goal for Glenwood.

After Tri-Center knotted the score with just 10 seconds remaining in regulation and two scoreless overtimes, Glenwood won the penalty kick phase 5-4 to secure a thrilling 3-2 victory in a non-conference boys soccer dual last Tuesday.

“The boys taking the penalty kicks were calm and knew where they were going with their kicks before they stepped up to the line,” Lovato said. “All five finished and we won. I am proud of the resolve the boys had, they could have folded in OT after giving up that goal in the last 10 seconds. Instead they dominated the OTs.”

John Palmer got Rams on the board in the game’s 15th minute when he took an assist from Jordan Renshaw. Tri-Center answered three minutes later to send the game into halftime tied at 1-1.

The Rams dominated possession much of the second half but did not score until the final minutes when Palmer was taken down by a Tiger player on a run. Kyle Jorgensen took the penalty kick for the Rams to make the score 2-1.

Glenwood appeared ready to walk off with the win but Tri-Center played a shot high into the box that was headed in for the equalizer with less than 10 seconds on the game clock.

Following the two scoreless overtimes, the Rams’ Turner Reich, Jon Tallmon, Palmer, Jorgensen and Renshaw all made their PKs while Tri-Center made four of five.

“The boys did what the coaches asked and put themselves in positions to finish,” Lovato said. “Today the ball didn’t end up in the back of the net like we thought it should have. The boys struck the ball well, unfortunately they were right at their goalkeeper. The boys controlled the tempo and were able to find the spots, they saw the field today.”

John Palmer’s goal in the 79th proved the difference for Glenwood in a 3-2 victory over Kuemper Catholic in Hawkeye 10 Conference boys soccer April 19.

Palmer’s kick sliced through the Knight defense for a shot that was initially blocked but he snared the deflection and booted in for the game-winner.

The goal capped a comeback that saw the Rams get down 2-1 midway through the first half.

Jordan Renshaw got the Rams on the board in the 25th minute off a set piece assist by Palmer. Turner Reich knotted the score in the 57th minute off a penalty kick.

Glenwood coach Cort Lovato said his team put together two great halves of soccer despite missing some early chances.

“They created many opportunities in the box in the first half, unfortunately they weren’t able to get it done,” he said. “Renshaw made a great hustle play to tap in a deflection from a set piece. Renshaw set the tone with his hard work this game, the team followed suit and never got discouraged after getting behind twice in the game.”

Kuemper got first half goals from Blake Baumhover and Caden Pedelty but were shutout over the final 48 minutes of play.

“The back line was able to deny Kuemper any balls in the middle and made it difficult to be played through,” Lovato said. “They played a much disciplined game. The team played a step faster than the previous game, and now are headed in the right direction.”
