Strong Communities Campaign
The Mills County YMCA has kicked off its 2014 Strong Communities Campaign with a goal of raising $55,000.
“Last year, we raised about that much,” Mills County YMCA Executive Director Diana Burchett said. “The money provides scholarships for memberships and program fees. Most of it last year was going to families for memberships.”
Specifically, Burchett said, the 2013 campaign provided about 1,200 membership and program scholarships for families and individuals in need of financial assistance.
“The Strong Communities Campaign provides funds for scholarships for families who otherwise would not be able to afford a YMCA membership,” she said.
The Mills County YMCA offers a variety of youth and adult wellness and recreation opportunities, ranging from youth sports and fitness classes to swimming lessons and aquatic workouts. There’s also day care and after-school activities for children, teen mentoring and a LiveStrong program set up to help adult cancer survivors reclaim their lives, both physically and emotionally.
“We’re so much more than just a place to go work out,” Burchett noted.
The facility in Glenwood is a branch of the YMCA of Greater Omaha, but Burchett pointed out that all donations made to the Mills County YMCA’s Strong Communities Campaign are used for local scholarships.
Burchett said the Mills County Strong Communities Campaign, formerly known as the Strong Kids Campaign, has been successful over the years because of generous support from the community.
“The people and businesses in Mills County have been very generous and very supportive of our campaign,” she said. “All of our staff members are supportive of what we do because they see the benefits of the programs we offer every day.”
