Rams open outdoor season with sweep at Carroll ‘Early Bird’ relays

Glenwood’s Megan Hughes, shown here last season, had a hand in four gold medals at the Carroll Early Bird Co-ed Relays.
The Glenwood girls and boys track teams opened its outdoor track and field season by combining to win 17 gold medals and sweep the team titles at the Carroll Early Bird Co-ed Relays Thursday.
The Ram boys claimed the team title with 148 points and nine top finishes. The host Tigers were second with 98 points.
“We were pleased with our performances under the circumstances of the weather,” said Glenwood boys coach Mark Starner. “It was very windy and got colder as the meet went on. I told the athletes that times and performances might not be great, but the most important thing was for them to compete and prepare to run their best in the conditions, and we felt that we were able to do that.”
Haze Stephens (400-meters), Chase Razor (high jump), Shain Pratt (long jump), Bryce Keller (800-meters), Kaden Crouch (200-meters) and Dylan Powles (400-meters) captured individual gold medals while the Rams’ 4x100-meter, sprint medley and shuttle hurdle relays also topped the field.
Crouch has had a particularly good start to his senior season after an injury plagued junior year. He also ran on the gold medal-winning 4x100 and the second place 4x200-meter relay.
“Kaden ran the fastest split in the runner up 4x200, second leg in the winning 4x100 and won the 200m dash in a clocking of 22.91,” Starner said. “Kaden has so much potential and is in his first season of varsity track. He is going to be fun to watch and see his progression on the track. He has already become a factor in all of our sprint events.”
Keller had his hand in two victories, one anchoring the sprint medley relay and the other winning the 800m run.
“Both were very gutty runs for the conditions,” Starner said.
The girls won eight golds on their way to scoring 142.67 points to easily outpace runner up Boone’s 101.3 points.
Megan Hughes had a big day for the Rams. The junior won the 100 and 400-meter hurdles and anchored Glenwood’s shuttle hurdle and 4x400-meter relays to gold. Also snagging gold medals for the Rams were Grace Berglund (3,000-meters), Caitlin Hebel (400-meters) and the 4x800 and 4x200-meter relays.
