Rams, Knights compete at Drake Relays

Glenwood’s Chase Razor followed up his second-place finish in the high jump at the Council Bluffs Lewis Central Co-ed Meet with a 14th place showing in the same event at the Drake Relays.

Athletes from Glenwood and Fremont-Mills competed at the 116th edition of the Drake Relays concluding this weekend in Des Moines.

Drawing track and field athletes from college and high school, “America’s Athletic Classic” saw Glenwood compete in four events on the Blue Oval that will host the Iowa State Track Meet next month.

Chase Razor was the top finisher for the Rams. The junior had a top leap of 6 feet, 2 inches to place 14th. Ajak Malual from Waukee topped 7 feet to win the event.

“This was the first time that Chase was able to clear the bar at Drake Stadium in his track career,” Starner said. Razor qualified for the state meet as a freshman and failed to clear the opening height of 5 feet, 11 inches and at last year’s Drake Relays he failed to make the opening height of 6 feet, 2 inches.

“So, this year was exciting for him to finally clear the height and make some good attempts at 6'4.   I think this is a boost to Chase's confidence and will help him build some momentum heading into the championship portion of our season.”

Razor also ran as part of the Rams’ 4x100-meter relay team that placed 58th. The quartet of Razor, Tristan Ludwig, Shain Pratt and Haze Stephens ran a 43.79.

The time was not an improvement on their qualifying time, Starner said, but with the loaded heat, he was pleased with how his team ran.

“Overall, it was good to get the experience on the track and in a big-time situation,” Starner said. “We will take the experience gained and use it to fuel us to get better in our exchanges and hopefully we'll get another chance to perform again on the Blue Oval to redeem ourselves.”

Among the girls qualifiers, Glenwood 4x400-meter relay team of Caitlin Hebel, Haylee Hughes, Olivia Wright and Megan Hughes ran a 3:59.58 to place 18th

Grace Berglund, 3,000-meter qualifiers, ran a 10:18.71 to finish 16th.

“Grace set a new all-time best and ran the second fastest 3,000 (meters) in school history and continues to close the gap on the school record,” said Glenwood coach Jordan Bueltel. “The 4x400 (relay teams) was also incredibly impressive. They set a new school record and was dipped below 4:00 for the first time ever in school history.  Very excited to see what these girls can do the rest of the way.”

Fremont-Mills’ Lana Alley qualified for Drake in three events.

The senior anchored the Knights’ shuttle hurdle relay team to a 15th place finish. The group of Carlie Nuckolls, Reese Gute, Abby Malcom and Alley ran a 1:08.98, the fastest among Class 1A schools.

The Knights 4x100-meter relay team of Gute, Nuckolls, Alley and Kinley Blackburn placed 31st in 49.96.

Alley added a 13th place finish in the 100-meter hurdles.

Rams third, sixth at LC Relays

The Glenwood girls were third and the boys fourth at the Council Bluffs Lewis Central Co-ed Relays in Council Bluffs last Tuesday.

Atlantic captured the girls team title with 156 points. Clarinda was second with 104 points while the Rams’ 101 points tied with the host Titans.

Lewis Central won the boys team title with 120 points. Atlantic was second with 97 points. Glenwood finished fourth with 89 points.

The Glenwood girls were led by first place finishes from Megan Hughes in the 100-meter hurdles and Caitlin Hebel in the 400-meters. In the relays, the Rams grabbed gold in the sprint medley, distance medley and 4x800-meter relays.

Glenwood girls coach Jordan Bueltel said he thought the meet went “pretty well.”

“This was our first meet where the heat was something we had to deal with, but I felt the girls adapted nicely,” the coach said. “We had some great performances. Our 4x8 really did a nice job picking up a win with some girls that haven’t maybe ran in our top group yet, but they really impressed.”

Bueltel also praised the work of Hebel in the 400-meters, going under 1:00 for the first time and is now ranking as the second fastest in school history.

Hughes also had a new personal record winning the 100-meters hurdles.

“All of the girls did great, and we are excited how things are coming together,” Bueltel said.

On the boys side, Glenwood head coach Mark Starner agreed the warm weather was something his team had to adjust to at the meet.

“This was the first day that we actually had to deal with the heat and ideal competition conditions,” he said. “We set several season and personal bests on the day.  While we finished fourth in the team standings, one point out of tying for third and eight points out of second, our major concern wasn't necessarily scoring a lot of points but attempting to better some specific event performances.”

The boys had a strong day in the field events with Chase Razor taking second and Aaden Lopez fourth in the high jump and Lincoln Skarnulis double-medaling in the shot and the discus. Todd Schmitt also added a third-place medal in the discus.

Lopez notched the Rams lone individual gold, winning the 110-meter hurdles.

Glenwood added a relay gold from Shain Pratt, Haze Stephens, Dylan Powles and Aaden Lopez in the 4x200-meter relay. The group broke a 60-year school record with a time of 1:29.72.

The 4x100-meter Relay team of Razor, Tristan Ludwig, Pratt and Stephens ran the second fastest time of the year, with an alternate relay lineup.

“We actually tied with Sergeant Bluff with 42.90, which would go down to the one-thousandth of a second which would find us in third place,” Starner said.
