Rams headed to state wrestling duals

The Glenwood wrestling team celebrates is Iowa State Duals bid in Sergeant Bluff-Luton Tuesday night. The Rams knocked off Atlantic and the home Warriors to punch their ticket to state for the first time since 2006.
For the first time in two decades, the Glenwood boys will wrestle at the Iowa State Duals Wrestling Tournament.
Glenwood, the No. 13 ranked team in Class 2A, avenged a previous loss to No. 11 ranked Atlantic and then upset No. 7 ranked and undefeated Sergeant Bluff-Luton on its home mat to reach the state duals for the first time since the 2006 season.
State duals kick-off Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at the Xtreme Arena in Coralville. The No. 8 seeded Rams open against No. 1 seeded Decorah in the first round. The Vikings have nine wrestlers currently ranked in the IAWrestle.com poll.
Glenwood coach Tucker Weber and his coaching staff knew this team had the capability to be a top eight team in the state this year.
“We needed to put that into action last night by beating two very good teams,” Weber said. “The wrestlers believed in themselves and wrestled extremely well. As a community, it means a lot.”
The Rams opened the Region 7 duals against Atlantic, the only team to beat them in a 16-1 regular season. Glenwood lost that 36-37 a little over two weeks ago but ran away with the rematch 44-31.
Glenwood snapped the Warriors (19-1) streak of seven straight state dual bids with a 40-29 win in the nightcap. The Rams won eight matches in the dual, including five pins and a major decision.
“We wrestled extremely well throughout both duals,” Weber said. “We made a line-up adjustment against Atlantic that turned the dual around from the first time we wrestled them. It takes all 14 wrestlers to be on the same page and wrestle hard for six minutes whether they win or lose to become a good dual team.”
Weber said he has heard from multiple community members, former coaches, alumni, and administration reaching out and congratulating the team on their accomplishment.
“One of our goals was to make it to state as a team and now we are going to set a new goal of wrestling our hardest for three duals and see how far we can climb up the ladder to try and bring a team trophy home,” Weber said. “Hopefully we have set a high standard for the youth wrestlers to make this a tradition every year.”
The Rams’ Ace Cochrane (106), Brody Black (126), Joseph Leick (132), Nile Lundvall (175), Mason Koehler (215), Drake Buthe (285) all notched two wins each in Sergeant Bluff.
