Berglund tops girls race, Glenwood boys fifth at home meet

Glenwood’s Deagan Stanley, shown here earlier this season, ran a personal-best 17:07 at the meet in Glenwood last Monday to place 11th.

The Rams’ Jada Kanngieser ran a 21:56 for 22nd place at the meet.

Grace Berglund won the girls race to help the Glenwood girls to a third place finish in the team standings and the Ram boys were fifth at the Glenwood Invite last Monday at Glenwood Lake Park.

The meet, a late addition to the schedule following September’s plethora of meet rain-outs, featured more than 20 teams running on the Rams’ dedicated course.

In the girls race, Harlan bested Treynor by a single point, 79 to 80 to win the team title. The Glenwood girls tallied 96 points for third.

Berglund ran a 17:53 to edge Treynor’s Lily Miller by just over five seconds to win top honors. Berglund’s time was a new school record.

“I’m glad we were able to get a meet in for our athletes, since the weather this year has been so wild,” said Glenwood girls coach Marissa Klindt. “(Athletic Director) Mr. Bissen did a fantastic job organizing it on such short notice.

“We thought all our high school girls ran great. Seven girls ran their best 5K times ever, including Grace. Our underclassmen are really stepping up too.”

Katie Leick ran a 21:46 to place 20th, Jada Kanngieser was 22nd in 21:56, Sara Ruth Johnson was 28th in 22:13 and Karsyn Lundvall was 35th in 22:37.

The Rams second through fifth runner were separated by less than a minute.

Shenandoah beat out Logan-Magnolia 108 to 118 in the team standings to win the boys race. The Rams were fifth with a score of 144.

Tri-Center’s Have Weers topped the boys field with a time of 15:56.

Deagan Stanly ran a personal best time of 17:07 to lead the Rams with an 11th place finish.

Cole Berglund ran an 18:03 for 27th place, Lucas Kauffman was 31st in 18:17, Jaxton Long was 32nd in 18:21 and Lucas Harms was 43rd in 18:55.

Six of the Rams’ seven varsity runners posted personal bests during the event.

“The trio of Cole Bergland, Lucas Kauffman, and Jaxton Long, our second through fourth runners, is developing a strong bond, with only an 18-second difference between them,” said Glenwood boys coach Todd Peverill. “I am very pleased with the entire team's progress, as 12 runners set new personal bests. Since our first home meet in August, nearly all of them have improved by over one minute.”
