Special Election Needed To Fill Silver City Council Seats

A special election will take place in Silver City on Tuesday, Jan. 29, to elect a new mayor and four representatives to the city council.

Until results of that election are canvassed by the Mills County Board of Supervisors, the city won’t have enough council members to conduct business as a municipal government.

Silver City has five seats on its city council, but currently only two of those positions are occupied – by Wendell  Kasprick and Danielle Calkins. A minimum of three council members is required by law to constitute a quorum.

The city was operating with three council members until Amy Freuck, who was also serving as mayor pro-tem, gave up her seat on Dec. 31.

Silver City has a mayor, but Tommy Jensen recently announced he’s moving away from the community. Last month, he submitted his resignation effective Dec. 31, 2018, but has now agreed to serve until Feb. 19, Mills County Auditor Carol Robertson said.

The special election ballot lists one mayoral candidate – Sharon McNutt - and four candidates for four seats on the city council, including Calkins who must run in the election because she joined the council by appointment (to fill a previous vacancy). The other council candidates are Rose Mary Schoening, Brett Christensen and Jason V. Young.

The election will bring Silver City’s governing body up to full-strength, but the mayoral post and four council seats will all be up for election again in November.

Voting on Election Day will take place in the Silver City Community Building, located at 403 Main St., from noon – 8 p.m. Ballots will be hand-counted.

Ballots for early and absentee voting are now available at the Mills County Auditor’s Office. Silver City residents can call 712-527-3146 or e-mail crobertson@millscoia.us for additional information.
