Shooting Claims Life of Glenwood Teen
A 27-year-old Ohio man is accused of fatally shooting 18-year-old Kathryn Lauren Weber-Kuhl of Glenwood Saturday evening outside the Linnwood Estates assisted living facility where she was employed.
Mark Alan Troutman, of Sylvania, Ohio, was arrested less than 90 minutes after the incident.
The shooting took place shortly after 6:30 p.m. Glenwood police officers and Glenwood Rescue personnel responded to a report of a person down outside the Linnwood Estates building. Upon their arrival, officers and medics found Weber bleeding on the ground with a gunshot wound that was determined to be fatal.
According to an affidavit filed in Mills County District Court, while at the scene, police officers spoke with Weber’s boyfriend who said Weber had called him minutes before the shooting and stated, “He’s here,” referring to Troutman.
Weber’s boyfriend told officers Troutman had been stalking Weber because she had ended a relationship with him. He also told officers Troutman had been staying at the Western Inn motel in Glenwood and gave police a description of Troutman’s vehicle, which was located outside the motel moments later.
Investigators say at the same time officers were checking the area around the motel, Troutman’s mother called the Mills County E-911 communications center. She told the dispatcher her son was in a Glenwood motel and was suicidal. At that point, Glenwood Police Chief Eric Johansen contacted motel management, which confirmed Troutman was inside and had given up his weapon.
Officers entered the motel around 7:50 p.m., apprehended Troutman and secured a handgun.
The motel manager told investigators she had spoken with Troutman the night before the shooting and he was upset because Weber had ended their relationship. When the manager spoke to Troutman again Saturday night, he was crying. The manager said Troutman told her he was the man police were looking for and that Weber was dead. The manager asked Troutman if he had a weapon. He said he did and showed her a small silver handgun. She took the weapon and placed it in a hand towel. She then walked Troutman to the lobby where he was arrested.
Johansen said his department was able to apprehend Troutman in a timely manner because of assistance from witnesses and the motel manager, who has requested her name not be released.
“She (motel manager) played a critical role in assisting us,” Johansen said. “We acted on information that was provided to us and acted as quickly as we could.”
Troutman is charged with first-degree murder, a Class A felony, and is being held in the Mills County Jail on $5 million bond.
In an interview with Glenwood Police and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Troutman admitted going to Linnwood Estates to talk to Weber about why she broke up with him, but said he couldn’t recall shooting her.
Investigators described Troutman as an acquaintance of Weber and believe he’s been to Glenwood on multiple occasions.
