Sanders tops field at Ed Winger Classic

Caleb Sanders won the heavyweight crown and the Glenwood wrestlers placed sixth as a team at the Ed Winger Classic at Urbandale High School Saturday.

Southeast Polk was the team champion with 200 points. West Des Moines Valley was second with 165.5. The Rams finish sixth with 110.5 team points.

Glenwood coach Brad Asche said he thought his team wrestled “pretty good” against a loaded field of ranked wrestlers in Urbandale.

“We put seven guys on the medal stand, some of the younger guys too, so that was good to see,” Asche said. “We had a champion and a runner up and wrestled some good competition. We’ll see a lot of these guys next at the state tournament. We either adapt to what we need to do or get left in the dust.”

Top ranked heavyweight Sanders, along with 152-pounder Trevor Anderson, were the lone Rams to reach the finals of their weight classes. Glenwood is still without the services of No. 2 182-pound Iowa State recruit Anthony Sherry, who is nursing a shoulder injury.

Sanders battled No. 3 ranked Jake Ryan of Johnston in the championship, winning by ultimate tiebreaker, 3-2. The match was one of several Sanders had against ranked heavyweights.

“Caleb has seen about all the ranked guys now accept for the Waukee kid,” Asche said. “He’s wrestling his matches and doing what he needs to do to get wins out of it.”

Top ranked Cade DeVoss of Southeast Polk won a 7-2 decision over Anderson in the finals pitting the top two ranked wrestlers in Class 3A at 145 pounds. Anderson had dropped a December decision to DeVoss, 3-1.

“He separated the gap on us a little bit and opened up on us,” Asche said of the difference in the first match to the second match between DeVoss and Anderson. “We have to make some changes going forward to be the top guy there. We need to make sure we’re doing the right things and what we have to do. Matches like this can do that.”

Anderson did pick up his 150th career win at the tournament.

Also placing for Glenwood was Isaac Bales (third at 220 pounds), Kenny Lampman (sixth at 195), Cole Mayberry (sixth at 182), Jordan Renshaw (sixth at 152) and Dalton Book (fifth at 126).

Rams split
H-10 double dual

The Glenwood wrestling team split a pair of Hawkeye 10 Conference duals in Clarinda Thursday.

The Rams downed the host Cardinals 61-15 in the capper after dropping a tight, 42-33 decision to Atlantic.

After winning 11 of 14 matches against the Cardinals, five by fall, Glenwood ran into the red hot Trojans, who now sit atop the Hawkeye 10 Conference rankings with a 7-1 dual record.

The match of the night pitted nationally ranked heavyweights’ Caleb Sanders and Atlantic’s John McConkey in their third meeting of the season. McConkey pulled out a 3-2 win by ultimate tie-breaker over Sanders.

Brian Krewson (132), Trevor Anderson (145), Brett Mower (160), Cole Mayberry (182), Kenny Lampman (195) and Isaac Bales (220) all recorded a pair of wins for Glenwood.
