Poker run raises funds, awareness for fight against breast cancer

More than 500 participants in the ninth annual “Bikers For Boobies” poker run converged on Glenwood Saturday afternoon to help raise money for the fight against breast cancer and to bring awareness to the disease.

Glenwood’s Keg Creek Brewing Co. was one of five stops on the event that began in Omaha and passed through southwest Iowa before concluding Saturday night in Ralston, Neb.

“It just started out with several of us sitting around one day and talking about doing something for breast cancer awareness,” Cheryl James said. “It’s grown over the years and we hope for our 10th year (2017) to be absolutely amazing.”

Poker run coordinator Dale Curington said this year’s event, which included a silent auction and raffle, was expected to raise between $15,000 - $20,000. Proceeds are to be given to the University of Nebraska Medical Center Life Renewal Center, which provides assistance to cancer patients.

“This year, we’re also going to help out some individual cancer cases here locally,” Curington said.
