Glenwood captures first conference victory

The Glenwood girls built a 33-22 halftime lead and hung on late in a 57-44 victory over Council Bluffs St. Albert in Hawkeye 10 Conference basketball Saturday.

“I was pleased with how we played overall and being 1-0 in the conference is always good,” said Glenwood girls coach Brian Rasmussen. “I think catching St. Albert when we did, on back to back travel nights for them, worked out.

“We thought they might not have their legs 100 percent so we really wanted to run and push the ball and use that to our favor. I think it led to a lot of easy buckets for us. And we hit eight three’s.”

The Rams (3-2 overall, 1-0 in the conference) limited the Saintes (2-3 overall, 0-3 in the conference) to just 22 first half point as they took their 11-point margin into halftime.

But the Saintes chipped away in the second half, cutting the lead down to five with less than five minutes to go before the Rams rallied for the 13-point win.

“We got a little complacent I thought,” Rasmussen said. “We had some unforced errors that shifted the momentum and they really built on that draining two three’s in that span and before you know it, it’s a two possession game and they have the ball with a chance to cut it to three.”

Rasmussen answered by going to a slowed down offense that didn’t so much look to stall as get a look at an easy layup.

“We spread them out and got some easy buckets,” Rasmussen said. “We didn’t want to stall, we wanted high percentage looks and it worked.”

Brooklyn Taylor led a balanced score sheet for Glenwood with 14 points. Elle Scarborough added nine points and six rebounds while five other Rams scored six points or more.

The Rams hit a season-high eight three pointers – from seven different shooters – but again struggled at the free throw line, shooting 13-for-27.

“If I had to point out a negative that would be it,” Rasmussen said. “But the bright side is we were getting there. We attacked the basket a lot and got to the line and even though we didn’t make them, it’s still a plus in our book.”

Teagan Blackburn led St. Albert with 14 points.

Council Bluffs Lewis Central’s Megan Witte scored 20 of her game-high 27 points after halftime as the Titans rallied for 53-47 victory over Glenwood in girls basketball last Tuesday in Council Bluffs.

The Rams (2-2) took a 27-22 lead into halftime but the Titans (3-0 overall, 1-0 in the conference) erased that lead with a 15-7 third quarter to rally and pull away.

Brielle Smith led Glenwood with 13 points and Elle Scarborough added 12.
