Mower is runner-up, Rams 26th at C.B. Classic

Brett Mower was a runner up finisher and Glenwood placed 26th in the team standings at the Council Bluffs Wrestling Classic at the Mid-America Center Saturday.

Liberty, Mo. won the team title after having four wrestlers reach the finals and three win individual titles. Waukee was second.

Glenwood finished with 145 points.

“The kids wrestled tough,” said Glenwood coach Brad Asche. “There were some good teams and individuals there. I saw some growth and some fight int he kids. We lost some matches that we shouldnt have so we will get back to work.”

Mower was the Rams’ lone medalist on the day in a tournament that featured 40 teams and dozens of ranked wrestlers from Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri and Minnesota. The Glenwood senior bested wrestlers from four states and went 6-0 to reach the finals.

Facing off against Millard South’s Isaac Trumble, Nebraska’s to ranked 182-pounder, Mower and countered all match long but ultimately fell 9-3 the Patriot junior, 9-3.

Other place winners for Glenwood were 170-pounder Nick Gill was 10th, 160-pound Mitch Mayberry was 15th and 106-pound Dalton Bell was 11th in the gold bracket.

Rams 2-1 in home opener

The Glenwood wrestling went 2-1 in its home opener quadrangular last Tuesday.

The Rams notched dual victories over Southwest Iowa 54-30 and Council Bluffs St. Albert 78-0 and dropped a decision to Harlan, 47-28.

The loss to Harlan, in the final dual of the night, was disappointing for Glenwood coach Brad Asche. The Cyclones won nine of 14 matches, seven by either fall or major decision.

“That dual brought up some things we need to work on,” Asche said. “They bumped their lineup and we were winning in matches and got beat, gave up points at the end of matches and periods to lose or got beat by guys we have already beat this year. We will go back to work and learn from our mistakes.”

Dalton Bell (106 pounds), Ryker Case (132), Mitch Mayberry (160) and Brett Mower (182) each recorded three wins in the quadrangular.
