Glenwood caps strong week with third place at Harlan

The Glenwood girls went 3-3 and finished third in the gold division at the Harlan Invitational Volleyball Tournament Saturday.

The Rams (6-3) scored wins over Logan-Magnolia 21-13, 21-9, East Sac County 21-10, 21-16 and the host Cyclones 21-13, 21-11 and took losses against Indianola 23-25, 18-21, Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln 16-21, 21-13, 10-15 and to Tri-Center, in a rematch from Thursday night, 10-21, 17-21.

Joslyn Lewis led Glenwood with 23 kills. Brielle Smith added 20 and Elle Scarborough 18. Cera Gray dished up 50 set assists in the six matches combined.

Rams sweep quad

The Glenwood girls volleyball team opened the season with a trio of wins in a home quadrangular Thursday night.

The Rams recorded wins over Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson 25-9, 25-13, MVAOCOU 25-9, 25-9 and Tri-Center 25-23, 25-19 for the sweep.
“I thought we played really well, really well as a team and our energy level was up,” said Glenwood coach Chelsey Hirt. “We normally kind of settle a little bit and let a team get a little run on us and that did not happen so I was pleased.”

Glenwood’s attack wasn’t perfect in the three matches but got better as the night went along, Hirt said. The Rams finished with 70 kills in three matches combined.

“I feel like when we did get a little better each match and I think when we play teams that are up to our level, we tend to play a little better too,” Hirt said.

Joslyn Lewis led a balanced attack with 20 kills on the night. Three other Ram hitters also recorded more than 10 kills.

“We’re still trying different lineups and seeing where we fit and there are some girls that are still neck-in-neck and some that excel in one area and another in a different area,” Hirt said. “It’ll be a journey this year.”
