Glenwood girls top field at Harlan meet

HARLAN - For the second time in three days, the Glenwood girls came out on top.

After Tuesday’s title at the Creston Invitational, the Rams bested the field at the Harlan Cross Country Invitational Thursday to take home another meet championship.

The Rams were led by Lacey Jackson’s seventh place finish. Jackson was followed closely by teammates Kate Kaufman (eighth), Aubrey McIntyre (ninth) and Katelyn Malcom (12th).

“I was very pleased with how the meet turned out for us,” said Glenwood Coach Jeff Janssen. “After a week with great workouts two weeks ago, followed by a week with two meets and the temperature being what it was, I was definitely a little unsure how it was going to go. Regardless, it was awesome to see our top three: Lacey Jackson, Kate Kaufman, and Aubrey McIntyre, finish right in a row and in the top 10, and it was great to see Katelyn Malcom finish just a few spots behind them.”

Abi Schultz (26th), Erin Schultz (27th) and Lauren Becker (31st) rounded out the Ram finishers. Janssen said those three might be a little disappointed in their performances but they have no reason to hang their head.

“They had a fabulous two meets this week and I know they’ll be ready to set some personal records on Thursday at Shenandoah,” Janssen said.

The team victory is the school’s third straight and fourth overall this season – both are school records.

“Coupled with a nice performance by our middle school and a dominating performance by our junior varsity, led by Lexi Hankins, Grace Presley, Nikki Schuppan, Haley Woods and Arianna Springer, it was a great finish to our week,” Janssen said.

The Glenwood boys finished second in Harlan behind a fourth place finish by Parson Covington and a sixth place finish by Mason Parks.

“We ran well,” said Glenwood coach Todd Peverill. “We felt pretty good at this one after Creston. Things didn’t quite work out at the end for us. But team-wise we ran well together.”

The Rams added a 14th place finish by Sam McIntyre with Tyler Huey placing 26th, Gable Thompson 32nd, William Ingels 50th and Adison Presley 57th.

McIntyre was in a pack near the front for much of the race and Thompson lost a shoe in the first 150 meters and couldn’t make up the ground.

“A few things didn’t go our way and that cost us a bit but we’re getting stronger as a team and guys are battling for spots so that’s good to see,” Peverill said.

Jerry Jorgenson of Treynor was the individual champion with a time of 17:40 while Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson took home the team title.

Rams sweep
at Creston invite

The Glenwood girls and boys swept the team titles at the Creston Cross County Invitational last Tuesday.

The Glenwood girls squad had all five of its runners place in the top 10 to finish with 34 points while the boys’ Mason Parks won the individual title and the team title with 45 points.

Kate Kaufman paced the girls with a fourth place showing. Her time of 21:22 was less than 10 seconds out of second place. Creston’s Brielle Baker (first, 20:45) and Braelyn Baker (second, 21:12) took top individual honors.

Also scoring top finishes for the Ram girls were fifth place Aubrey McIntyre, seventh place Katelyn Malcom, eighth place Lacey Jackson and 10th place Erin Schultz.

The Glenwood boys topped the field with 45 points. Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson was second with 57 points.

Parks’ time of 17:49 was 12 seconds better than runner-up Jalen Petersen of Atlantic. The Rams’ Parson Covington earned a third place finish with a time of 18:04.

“Parson ran very well and Mason ran even better,” said Glenwood coach Todd Peverill. “He (Mason) is getting his legs back. He does so much swimming over the summer it takes him about half the season to get going. He’s doing the same thing he did last year and really coming on. He’s really helping us team-wise. We had a lot of guys run well. Sam (McIntyre) was right there and Gable (Thompson) had a great race.”

Sam McIntyre picked up a seventh place finish, followed by 14th place Gable Thompson and 20th place Tyler Huey to round out the Ram boys scorers.
