Five Rams remain in medal hunt at state wrestling meet

DES MOINES - After an up and down opening round at the Iowa State Wrestling Tournament, the Glenwood wrestling team has five wrestlers still in contention for medals at the Wells Fargo Arena.

The Rams’ Trevor Anderson (145 pounds), Anthony Sherry (182) and Zach Haggstrom (220) all won their opening round matches to advance to Friday’s quarterfinals.

The state tournament resumes Friday at 9 a.m.

Haggstrom needed just :55 seconds to pin Cedar Rapids Xavier’s Alex Francois in the opening round.

Anderson won an 8-3 decision over Chase St. John of  Cedar Rapids Prairie to advance to Friday’s 145-pound quarterfinals.

Sherry defeated Ben Schiltz of Ankeny 8-4 in his state opener to first round to advance to Friday’s quarterfinals at 182.

The Rams Caleb Sanders and Isaac Bales both bounced back from tough opening round losses to win consolation round matches to remain in the medal hunt.

Sanders dropped a 5-3 decision to Callan Tomlin of Oskaloosa in the opening round. He then got by Nolan Bell of Muscatine in a 6-3 decision in the consolation round,.

The Rams Isaac Bales lost a tough 3-1 to decision to Waterloo East’s Eric Gleiter before bouncing back to knock off Johnston’s Bobby Piagentini via 16-0 technical fall.

Rams’ 113-pounder Dalton Book, in his first state tournament appearance, dropped his state opener to Drew Bennett of Fort Dodge by fall. Keano Roberts of Bettendorf then eliminated book in the consolation bracket by an 8-3 decision.

Jordan Renshaw fell 5-0 to Anthony Zach of Waukee in the opening round then saw his season end in the consolation round with an 8-2 loss to Alex Ward of Dubuque Hempstead.

Brett Mower dropped his opener to Bettendorf’s Alex Lopez 13-9 in the 170-pound weight class. Mower saw his season come to an end later Thursday morning with an 11-2 major decision loss to Devin Ludwig of Western Dubuque.
