Glenwood routs T.J. 64-17 in season-opener

The Glenwood girls basketball team used it’s full-court press to build a 19-2 first quarter lead and never looked back in a 64-17 season-opening victory over Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson last Tuesday.

The Rams’ trapping, full-court pressure forced the Yellowjackets to turn the ball over seven times and use two timeouts to regroup in the first quarter alone.

“That gave us a cushion to start with and then we got into a pretty good rhythm scoring after that,” said Glenwood coach Barry Loeffelbein.

The second quarter was more of the same as the Rams rolled to a 35-4 halftime lead.

In the second half, Glenwood held T.J. without a field goal for over seven minutes.
The Yellowjackets didn’t crack double-figures until Deziree Kearney’s three point with 5:20 to go in the third quarter.

Jana King’s layup with 2:18 to go in third quarter put the Rams ahead 48-17.
All nine Glenwood players scored in the game with six scoring six points or more led by Halie Darrow’s game-high 16 points.

Danika Lucy, in her first varsity start, hit 6-of-7 shots and scored a career-high 14 points. The 6-foot-3 junior also blocked seven shots.

“Everybody got her the ball in good position,” Loeffelbein said of Lucy. “It was a good first step. We need to keep getting better. She was is good position defensively most of the time and we got her the ball offensively too, so we’ll take that.

“It’s a good first game. You like getting everybody involved and getting everybody the ball and having some success.”

Kearney and Josie Starner led the Yellowjackets with six points each.
