Glenwood wins Hawk-10 title

COUNCIL BLUFFS - The last time the Glenwood wrestling team sat atop the team standings at the end of the day at the Hawkeye 10 Conference wrestling tournament, most of its current roster were in kindergarten.

On Saturday, those wrestlers grew up, with three winning individual titles, as the Rams snared their first conference title since 2006, out-distancing runner up Creston 237.5 to 201 in the team standings.

For Glenwood coach Brad Asche the title was a long time coming.

“I knew it had been that long but I’m not sure the kids did,” said Asche. “In 2013, we won the dual championship but came up short at the conference tournament and were runner ups to Creston. It’s always an unspoken goal to win the tournaments. These kids were put to a test every week with the schedule we had. We’ve placed well at a lot of tournaments but we haven’t won a lot of tournaments so it was awesome to see these kids get the opportunity to hold a trophy over their head.”

Asche said he saw a little something different in his wrestlers’ eyes at practice this week.

“I got the feeling they were ready,” Asche said. “We practiced some things this week that we needed to happen out on the mats and eventually we saw some growth out of kids. We said Friday if we had 14 place winners, we can do it. We wanted to send the seniors out with a conference title and that was our thought coming in. To be able to come through and pull it off was great to see. We got a lot of bonus points and it was a team effort.”

In all, the Rams had five wrestlers reach finals with three – 145-pound Trevor Anderson, 182-pound Anthony Sherry and 220-pound Isaac Bales – finishing with perfect days to take home the championship for the Rams.

The Class 3A, No. 2 ranked Anderson defeated No. 7 ranked Gabe Kjeldgaard of Council Bluffs Lewis Central for the third time this season, 5-4. The conference title is Anderson’s third straight.

“They’ve wrestled quite a bit in their high school careers; they always seem to be at the same weight,” Asche said of Anderson and Kjeldgaard. “I just think Trevor had it in his mind to be a three time conference champion – he’s a four-time finalist – and he did that. It’s huge for him.”

Sherry bounced back from an early takedown by Red Oak’s Thomas Bentley in the 182-pound finals to win by first period fall. The conference title is Sherry’s first after falling in the finals at the conference meet for three straight years to former Creston state champion Chase Shiltz all three times. The senior Iowa State recruit returned early last week from an arm injury that sidelined him for two weeks.

"He’s had that monkey on his back for three years and he pulls it out this year and gets it,” Asche said. “Coming off where he’s been with his injury, it’s good to see him getting ready for the ‘real’ part of the season. He’s kicking on all cylinders.”

Bales pinned his way to the finals where he also pinned Denison’s Jaden Heiden in 1:01 to win the 220-pound title.

“He had a pretty dominating performance,” Asche said. “He had a mental boost last week with how well he wrestled at the Ed Winger meet. It was good for him to get this.”
Glenwood’s Brett Mower (160) and Caleb Sanders (285) just missed out on individual titles after falling in the finals.

Caleb Sanders battled Atlantic’s John McConkey in their fifth match up this season in the heavyweight finals. McConkey walked away with his third win this season in sudden-victory when Sanders was called for a questionable stalling penalty. The resulting point for McConkey proved the difference in the 2-1 final.

“It was controversial,” Asche said of the stalling penalty. “It’s a tough one for me because those two have battled each other for years and that’s the last time they get to go toe-to-toe and someone’s opinion on a call decides it instead of seeing them wrestle it out. It’s disappointing.”

Mower was pinned by Lewis Central’s Willie Waugh in the 160-pound finals.

Rams sweep
on senior night

Glenwood swept a pair of Hawkeye 10 Conference foes in a wrestling doubl-dual on Senior Night last Tuesday.

The Rams knocked off Denison 82-0 and Kuemper Catholic 70-12 by winning 26-of-28 matches.

Kenny Lampman (195), Isaac Bales (220), Tyler Huey (113), Ryker Case (120), Dalton Book (126), Brian Krewson (132), Tanner Maxwell (138), Trevor Anderson (145), Brett Mower (170) and Anthony Sherry (182) all won a pair of matches in two duals.
