Glenwood stays perfect in 71-31 win

Nate Mohr scored 19 points and Christian Stanislav 17 as Glenwood improved to 2-0 on the season with a 71-32 victory over Creston in boys Hawkeye 10 Conference basketball Friday in Creston.

The Rams, who have topped 70 points in both wins this season, ran out to a 20-7 first quarter lead then blew the game open out-scoring the Panthers 28-5 in the third quarter.

“I felt we played a  solid second half,” said Glenwood coach Curt Schulte. “Our defense was very active and created a lot of turnovers.  The offense played very unselfish and overall our ball movement was pretty good.

Glenwood shot 54 percent from the field (28-of-51), including 8-of-19 from behind the arc.

Mohr led the Rams with 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Stanislav added 17 points and five rebounds. Andrew Blum picked up 12 points and nine rebounds.

Glenwood made quick work of Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson in its boys basketball season-opener last Tuesday.

The Rams rattled off the game’s first nine points, held the Yellowjackets scoreless for over 11 minutes of the first half and cruised to a 73-25 victory in game that lasted just over an hour.

A quick start is exactly the opening Glenwood coach Curt Schulte was aiming for.

“We got off to a great start, that’s our emphasis. We want quick starts to the game and the second half,” Schulte said.

After opening the game on a 9-0 run, the Rams led 18-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Then Glenwood really heated up.

Thanks to its trapping 1-2-2 press, Glenwood forced three quick turnovers that led to a 6-0 run and a T.J. timeout.

The run wouldn’t end there, however, as Glenwood would go on a 16-0 run to close out the half.

The Rams held the Yellowjackets scoreless the final 11 minutes of the first half.

Schulte was quick to praise his defense after the win.

“Our full-court pressure is a strength,” Schulte said. “We’re going to be applying a lot of full-court pressure this year and if we can get some turnovers in our favor, we think that’s a big advantage.”

The second half would be much of the same as Glenwood turned defense into instant offense. Cody Buresh’s put the Rams in front 52-11 with 3:11 to go in the third frame.

Schulte freely substituted in the second half with all 15 players on the Rams’ roster seeing action and 11 scoring at least two points. Of their 25 made field goals, the Ram recorded assists on 20 of them.

“We played very unselfish tonight,” Schulte said. “We turned down good shots to get great shots. We have to continue to do that to play good team basketball. We do that and great things will happen.”

Christian Stanislav led three Rams in double-figures with 18 points. Andrew Blum and Buresh added 12 each.

Thomas Jefferson, who was led in scoring by Christian Contreras with eight points, didn’t eclipse 20 total points until just over four minutes remained in the game.
