Glenwood second half too much for Cylones

The Glenwood girls soccer team scored all four of its goals in the second half en route to a 4-0 Hawkeye 10 Conference victory over Harlan at Creighton University’s Morrison Stadium Thursday.

After a scoreless first half in which Class 2A, No. 10 ranked Glenwood had plenty of chances to find the net, the Rams came out more aggressive in the second half but coach Amy Benson said other than a single lineup up change, she changed very little of her team’s strategy during the break.

“We started the exact same way other than Jordyn (Hanshaw) was out with a bad ankle. We just couldn’t find the back of the net in the first half and we did in the second half,” Benson said after the game.

Sarah Homan finally got the Rams on the board in the 49th minute when she took a pass from Sydney Gutschenritter, used two quick dribbles to get open and fired I shot into the lower right corer from 18 yards out.

“It usually just takes that one goal. We’re definitely a team that needs to play the whole 80 minutes. We get a little relaxed. We did a goo job of not getting relaxed and we kept pursuing.”

Nine minutes after Homan’s goal, Sydney Stivers made it 2-0, off Homan assist.

The Rams added goals in quick succession in the 71st and 74th minute by Stivers and Alicia Leu, respectively. Stivers’ goal came when the senior forwards swept left and brought a boot across the face of the goal into the far post.

“She does that,” Benson said of Stivers’ goal. “She tried it earlier and the goalie moved to that post. She got it through the second time.”

Benson said her teams aggressiveness paid off in the second half.

“We attacked a lot in the first half, we had 20 shots on goal, we just couldn’t find the back of the net,” she said. “We just talked about keep shooting and getting it ‘on frame.’” We knew it would happen eventually.”
Rileigh Spahn played all 80 minutes in goal and recorded five saves.

Denison 0

Seven different players scored for Glenwood in  a 10-0 Hawkeye 10 Conference girls soccer rout of Denison last Tuesday.

Alicia Leu opened and closed the Rams scoring onslaught with a goal just :27 seconds into the game and then capped the scoring with the 10th and final goal in the 49th minute.

“I was glad we were able to find the net,” said Glenwood coach Amy Benson. “The girls played well together.  It was also nice to try some new things and positions out.”

Sydney Stivers and Sarah Homan each added two goals. Also find the net was Jordyn Hanshaw, Sydney Gutschenritter, Danni Finn and Ana Frazee.

Rileigh Spahn and Frazee combined for the shut out in goal.
