Glenwood native to read her children’s book at elementary school, library

A Glenwood Community High School graduate will be returning to her hometown next week to read a children’s book she’s authored to students at Northeast Elementary School and youngsters at the Glenwood Public Library.

Kerri (Hamsher) Urban, 1993 GCHS graduate, is an elementary school teacher and mother of two children. She resides in Byers, Colo., a small community about 30 miles east of Denver.

“I have been an elementary teacher for 15 years now and I love seeing the joy in children’s eyes as they enjoy listening to new stories,” Urban said. “After reading countless books to my students and tucking my own two children, Sterling and McKena, into bed every night with wonderful stories, I decided to create my own. ‘A Day in the Life of Dexter’ is a children’s book series. The first title in the series is ‘Dexter Goes to the Zoo.’” 

Urban will be reading her book at Northeast Elementary on Monday. Tuesday, she’ll be sharing her story and be available for book signings and sales at the Glenwood Public Library during both the 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. story hours. Her readings at the library are open to the public.

Raised in Glenwood, Urban moved to Colorado shortly after graduating from GCHS. She earned a bachelor’s degree in literacy and elementary education and later a master’s degree in literacy and language arts. She has several family members still residing in the Glenwood area, including her mother, Pat Hamsher of Glenwood; brother Gene Schoening and his wife, Ann, of Silver City; and brother Jason of Tabor.
