Glenwood girls second, boys third at LC meet

Two weeks to the day since running their last meet due to wet weather, the Glenwood girls and boys were back in action Saturday at a soggy Council Bluffs Lewis Central Invitational Cross Country Meet at Iowa Western Community College.

The Glenwood girls were led by Janette Schraft’s top finish to place second as team. The Ram boys finished third in the team standings.

Harlan, with six runners all finishing in the top 10, won the girls team title while Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson was the boys champion.

Schraft’s time of 19:12.43 in the girls race was more than 12 seconds better than runner up Peyton Pogge of Tri-Center. But Schraft wasn’t the only Ram to have a strong showing. All seven of Glenwood girls runners placed in the top 22.

Glenwood girls coach Dani Woodman said it was good to see her team get back out there after the disappointment of not being able to compete last week and then having to wait out the status of Saturday’s race before officials decided to proceed.

“I think the girls were happy with how they raced,” Woodman said. “There were some girls who were happy with their first race (on Aug. 29) and some who weren’t happy. Abby McIntyre was certainly not happy with her first race so she came back and had a great race. Lauren Becker had a strong race. We had a lot of girls who were hungry.”

Abby McIntyre placed fifth at the Rams’ season opening meet in Glenwood with a time of 21:29. At LC Saturday, she finished third with a time of 20:40.50.

Aubrey McIntyre added a 13th place finish followed by Lacey Jackson in 14th, Erin Schultz in 15th, Lauren Becker in 16th and Abi Schultz in 22nd.

“We’re off a week again now so we can continue to get some training in before we have three meets in 10 days,” Woodman said. “We want to stay competitive. We have so much depth we’re very competitive so we need to focus on our training and we think we have room to work on the mental aspects of the race.”

The Glenwood boys finished with 80 points. Thomas Jefferson was the top team finisher with 59, followed by runner up Plattsmouth with 62.

Glenwood boys coach Todd Peverill said it felt good to get his team back out on a course against someone other than themselves but the course was still muddy and the times reflected that.

“We were getting antsy for the competition,” Peverill said. “We had some decent improvements, especially from Tyler Huey, who came out second. He showed a bunch of improvement. And Nate Rohrberg, in his second varsity race, he was right up there with our top guys. We did well.”

Sam McIntyre again paced Glenwood with a top team finish, placing 12th with a time of 17:58.11. Huey was 16th with a time of 18:15.40.

Parson Covington placed 17th followed closely by Mason Parks in 18th place. Rohrberg placed 23rd to complete the Rams’ scoring.

With another week off before the Ram run again with a meet at Creston and then a quick turnaround meet at Harlan three days later, Peverill said the work now can only help his team’s competition level inside the team and against other teams.

“You can do a lot in training, but the head-to-head competition, you can’t really get that in practice,” he said. “It’s important we have meets, especially for the younger guys. I knew we might struggle a little bit with our number five and six and seven runners the first few meets. But we’re seeing improvement there. A couple more meets and we should be doing pretty good.”
