Glenwood falls in football finale
Kylan Smallwood’s touchdown catch in overtime lifted Creston to a 20-12 victory over Glenwood in the Class 3A season finale for both teams Friday.
In what amounted to a defensive battle between two teams out of playoff contention, the Rams (4-5) out-gained Creston (3-6) 305 to 205 but lost three fumbles and were turned away on five fourth-and-short attempts.
The Rams trailed 12-6 late in the third quarter when Cole Mayberry blocked a punt that Noah Carter scooped up and returned for a game-tying touchdown.
The score would remain tied 12-12 until late in the fourth quarter when Glenwood went for it on a fourth-and-three at the Panthers’ 15 yard line. But Carter was stuffed at the line of scrimmage. The teams traded punts over the final minutes before going to overtime.
Glenwood won the toss in the extra-frame and elected to go on defense first. Panther quarterback Eli Loudon connected with Smallwood on the first play of overtime for the game-winner. Loudon then hooked up with Luke Lathan for the two-point conversion and an eight point lead before the Rams had even touched the ball in the overtime.
On the ensuing possession, Glenwood ran it three times to set up a fourth-and-goal at the four. A pass by quarterback Zach Carr went incomplete to end the game and the season for the Rams.
"The season didn't end like we had hoped, and the season just didn't go like we expected in general," said Glenwood coach Cory Faust. "But I'm really proud and thankful for the efforts and dedication of so many of our guys, especially many of our seniors. They were all in and competed to the best of their abilities up until the final whistle. I am thankful the seniors for all they've done for me."
Carr finished 9-of-19 passing for 147 yards. Colton Schutte led the way with 38 yards rushing. Carter and Dominic Robertson each picked up rushing touchdowns.
Glenwood finishes one of the toughest schedules in the state, including games against five playoffs teams and three district champions, with a record of 4-5.
