Glenwood crowns three at Dan Hill Invitational

Going up against some of the best competition from both Iowa and Nebraska, the Glenwood wrestling team crowned three individual champions and finished second in the team standings at the Dan Hill Invitational in Harlan Saturday.

The Rams’ finished with 239 points behind team champion Gretna, Neb. The Dragons, who had six individual champions in Harlan, won the Class B (second largest class) state dual in Nebraska last season and finished second at the traditional state tournament.

“There  were a lot of really good kids in every weight bracket,” said Glenwood coach Brad Asche. “Gretna had a lot of ranked kids, we had ranked kids, Perry and Harlan had ranked kids. Every team that was there brought quality competition and it made for a great tournament.”

Asche said he didn’t discuss with his team how the tournament might be a measuring stick of where his team is and where it needs to be but he did say he saw good things in Harlan.

“We were one or two matches away from walking out of there with a big smile on our face,” Asche said of how close his team was to winning the tournament. “We didn’t accomplish that goal so we go back to the drawing board on each individual, figure out what we need to get better and go from there.”

The Rams’ Trevor Anderson (145 pounds), Isaac Bales (220) and Caleb Sanders (285) all went 3-0 on the day to win their weight classes.

Anderson had a particularly strong day in what Asche called a “stacked” bracket.

"He had five or six state placewinners in his bracket alone and he walked away with the title,” Asche said. “He did a heck of a job all day. He’s come out really well in a weight class that’s loaded.”
Sanders pinned all three of his opponents in winning his title while Bales, wrestling first major tournament at 220 pounds, had a solid showing.

Also on Saturday, the Ram junior varsity competed in the Treynor Invitational, a varsity tournament of mostly 1A and 2A teams. Glenwood placed second in the tournament with four wrestlers reaching the finals and heavyweight Dillon Wiser taking home an individual title.

“We wrestled really well,” Asche said. “We were the only junior varsity team there so that was good to see our guys go out and compete.”
