Glenwood 2-1 at C.B. Classic
The Glenwood softball team won it’s opening two games before falling to Treynor in the championship game at the Council Bluffs Classic Saturday.
The Rams (13-5 overall, 6-2 in the Hawkeye 10 Conference) pounded a combined 25 hits in wins over Sidney and Central Decatur.
In game one, Glenwood plated four runs in the top of the eighth inning to get by Sidney 12-8 in extra innings. Against Central Decatur in the second game, the Rams built a 9-0 lead and cruised to an 11-3 win.
Sydney Biermann closed out game one and went the distance in game two to record both wins in the circle.
Biermann and Sara Ingoldsby both homered against Central Decatur.
“We played pretty off and on those (two opening) games,” said Glenwood coach Kylie Stanton. “We’d go an inning where we got four straight hits, then we’d get nothing. But we got the hits when we needed.”
In the championship game, Treynor (15-3) jumped out to an 8-0 lead after four innings and cruised to a 13-1 win behind a dominant performance by Sydni Huisman in the circle and at the plate. The Cardinals sophomore struck out eight, allowed just two hits and did not walk a batter. At the plate, she went 3-for-4 with a grand slam and two doubles.
Stanton admitted her team was tired by the championship game and it showed.
“This was not pretty one,” Stanton said. “Brooklyn Taylor hurt her shoulder against Harlan (Thursday) and she irritated it in her first at bat (against Treynor) and you can read it on the girls faces that things had changed a little bit. And Sydney was throwing game three for us and she was getting sore. We were just tired. It was a long stretch for us.”
The Cardinals played three runs in the first and five more in the fourth to take a commanding lead. Biermann, who started game, gave way to eighth grader Kelly Embray in the fifth inning.
“She did what I asked her to do,” Stanton said. “I wanted her to throw strikes. It was a good experience for her. We talked afterward about how much it stinks to lose but that the game didn’t matter. It was a just an extra game. We’re moving forward.”
Glenwood 4,
Harlan 2
Glenwood recorded just two singles in the game but took advantage of a handful of Harlan miscues to pull out a 4-2 victory on the road in Hawkeye 10 Conference softball.
Game two of the planned double-header was suspended by rain.
The Rams got singles from Sara Ingoldsby and Erin Stanley in a game where base runners were at a premium with Sydney Biermann and the Cyclones’ Morgan Schaben dueling in the circle. Biermann struck out nine and scattered seven hits. Schaben struck out 12 but walked three and had two wild pitches to go with the Cyclone’s three fielding errors.
“Schaben pitched great for them but we took advantage of what they gave us,” said Glenwood coach Kylie Stanton. “They didn’t want to give us a lot to hit. But everybody did what they had to do to move people around. We fake bunted, we made contact and we got runs across.”
The Rams led 3-1 heading into the final inning and added an insurance run and Biermann tossed a scoreless bottom half of the inning secure the win.
Glenwood 6,
Creston 2
Sydney Biermann overcame two early unearned runs and scattered four hits in a 6-3 Glenwood victory over Creston in Hawkeye 10 Conference softball last Tuesday.
Biermann fanned seven to improve to 4-2 in the circle this season.
Brooklyn Taylor drove in three runs on two hits for the Rams.
