Glenwood 2-0 after 40-6 win
Glenwood turned in another dominating defensive effort and its second straight 40-point performance on offense en route to a 40-6 triumph over visiting Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson Friday night at Ram Memorial Field.
The Rams improved to 2-0 by winning a contest they controlled from the start.
“Our defense has played well both weeks,” Glenwood coach Cory Faust said. “We’ve got some really good players. We’ve got a lot of guys that have been playing varsity football for two or three years and a lot of guys that have put in a lot of work in the offseason to get strong and fast. Not only are they good athletes, but they understand the game.”
Both teams sputtered on offense in the first quarter, but the Rams tallied three touchdowns in the second quarter to open up a 20-0 halftime lead.
Glenwood’s first TD came on a 9-yard pass from Kolten Wilwerding to Andrew Blum.
On the ensuing possession, the Yellowjackets’ offense was stopped on a 4th-and-2 running play from their own 26 yard line. Five plays later, Wilwerding found paydirt on a 2-yard plunge.
In the final minute of the half, Wilwerding teamed up with Blum again on a 30-yard touchdown toss.
After recovering an onside kick to start the third quarter, the Rams wasted little time in adding to their lead. Nate Nebel capped a short 36-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown blast.
Thomas Jefferson’s lone touchdown came late in the third quarter on a 2-yard run by Cameron Baker.
Glenwood put the game away with a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter – a 6-yard run by Cole Loeffelbein and an 11-yard scamper by Jake Clark.
Despite getting off to a slow start offensively, the Rams finished the night with 142 yards rushing and 154 passing. Wilwerding, still finding his way back from a preseason shoulder injury, completed 11-of-19 passes, averaging 14 yards per completion. Loeffelbein, who spent some snaps spelling Wilwerding under center, led all Ram rushers with 48 yards on 12 carries. Anthony Sherry and Nate Nebel rushed for 29 and 28 yards respectively.
“In another week, just knowing that Kolten’s the guy and having him back, I think we’ve got some room for improvement (offensively), still,” Faust said.
Defensively, Jake Murtfeld recorded a team-high eight tackles for the Rams.
Caleb Sanders was credited with 5.5 tackles and Noah Carter finished the night with 4.5. Loeffelbein, Sanders and Isaac Bales recovered Yellowjacket fumbles.
Baker was Thomas Jefferson’s leading rusher, netting 57 yards on 13 carries. The loss dropped the Yellowjackets’ record to 1-1 on the season.
Glenwood is home again this week, hosting Carroll Friday night at Ram Memorial Field. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
