Wolverines stay perfect with wins at Missouri Valley
The East Mills volleyball team capped a perfect 5-0 day at the Missouri Valley Tournament with the team title.
Class 1A, No. 6 ranked East Mills downed Woodbine (21-7, 21-1), Riverside (21-16, 21-10), Boyer Valley (21-8, 21-10), Exira/EHK (21-14, 21-6) and the host Big Reds, 21-14, 21-23, 15-12.
“Our passing and serving were on most of the day,” said East Mills coach Connie Blank. “Our team hitting efficiency for the day was .297. Another great overall team effort.”
Both East Mills (9-0 overall, 1-0 in the Corner Conference) and Missouri Valley entered the finals with identical 4-0 records on the day.
“Our energy level was outstanding and the all out effort is exactly what we needed,” Blank said of the final match. “We pulled away in the first set and then let the second set slip away but came roaring back in the third to capture the title. I’m very proud of the girls for staying focused throughout the match.”
Alex Knop, Lexi Ungry and Rachel Drake were selected to the all-tournament team.
Knop led the Wolverine with 30 kills on the day. She also added 23 digs and 15 ace serves. Ungry dished up 29 set assists and Drake knocked down 15 kills and four blocks.
Wolverines sweep
in triangular
The East Mills volleyball team improved to 4-0 on the season with a pair of wins over Southwest Valley and Essex Thursday in a triangular in Essex.
The Wolverines downed Southwest Valley 25-18, 25-18 and the host Trojanns, 25-15, 25-17, 25-7 in a Corner Conference victory.
“Our serve receive and blocking continue to improve,” said East Mills coach Connie Blank. “Overall, a great team effort.”
Alex Knop led a hot-hitting Wolverine attack with a combine 26 kills in the wins. For the Knights, East Mills recorded 55 kills.
Dezirae Drake and Madison Williams had eight kills each. Drake also added 25 set assists.
East Mills opens 2-0
East Mills smacked down 44 kills combined in a sweep of Underwood and Griswold at the Fremont-Mills Volleyball Jamboree last Tuesday in Tabor.
The Wolverines swept Griswold 25-19, 25-18 and Underwood 25-23, 28-26 to open the season 2-0.
Alex Knop led the Wolverines with 20 kills.
Dezirae Drake recorded 18 set assists and 11 digs.
