Two Rams in hunt at state wrestling meet

A pair of Glenwood’s state qualifiers remain in the hunt after the opening day of the Iowa State Wrestling Tournament.The Rams’ Vinny Mayberry (40-1) won by second period fall over A-D-M’s Jake Alexander (22-10) in his state opener. Mayberry advances to today’s 106-pound quarterfinals. At 120 pounds, Matthew Beem (18-4) lost his opener to Bondurant-Farrar’s Rylie Anderson (32-2) by a 7-4 decision. But Beem came back In the consolation round Thursday night to beat Max Currier of Clear Lake, 10-4.Both Mayberry and Beem will wrestle today beginning at 2:30 p.m.Glenwood’s Mitch Mayberry (182 pounds) and C.J. Carter (195) lost both of their first day matches at state and are eliminated.In other opening day results, East Mills’ Jackson Wray (31-4) dropped his Class 1A 160-pound first round match to Midland Wyoming’s Caden Ballou (39-6) by fall. The senior did come back to pin North Linn’s Jarin Peyton to go 1-1 on the day.
