Titans down Rams in Hawk-10 baseball

Council Bluffs Lewis Central pitcher Jake Powell limited Glenwood to just two hits in an 11-1 Titan victory in Hawkeye 10 Conference baseball Thursday.

Glenwood coach Kurt Schulz said he thought Powell threw well but the junior hurler was helped by his team’s lack of competitiveness at the plate.

“He threw well but we didn’t swing well,” Schulz said. “I was little disappointed in our effort offensively.”

The Rams (2-8) finished with just two hits – a home run by Colton Schutte and a single by Eli Bales – just a night after they were no-hit in a 21-0 loss to state ranked Bishop Heelan. Schulz said he’d like to think the Lewis Central performance wasn’t a result of a Heelan hangover but it’s hard to argue with the results.

“Things just didn’t go well for us at the plate,” Schulz said.
Schutte started and took the loss on the mound after allowing six hits and four earned runs with seven strikeouts.

Bishop Heelan 21,
Glenwood 0

Bishop Heelan’s Jackson Boever drove in five runs as part of a nine run first inning en route to a 21-0, four inning victory over Glenwood last Wednesday in Sioux City.

Boever smacked a two-run homer run and drove in three other runs on a bases loaded double in the opening inning of the Class 3A, No. 4 ranked Crusaders win. Heelan added eight more runs in the second frame.

“They came out and hit the ball hard, up and down the order and we didn’t play well,” said Glenwood coach Kurt Schulz.

Heelan’s Collin Kasperbauer held the Rams hitless and struck out four to earn the victory on the hill.

“He’s probably the best pitcher we’ve seen this year,” Schulz said. “He threw hard, changed speed and looked pretty good.”

Kaden Wray took the loss on the mound for Glenwood. The junior allowed six hits and five earned runs in an inning of work.

Shenandoah 3

Colton Schutte  drove in two runs on a pair of triples and Pierce Harrington struck out nine for Glenwood in a 9-3 victory over Shenandoah in Hawkeye 10 Conference baseball last Tuesday.

The Rams, winners of two in a row after an 0-6 start, smacked 10 hits of Mustang pitching. Eli Bales went 3-for-4 with three runs scored while Michael Radford and Andrew Holiday both added two hits each.

“We played relaxed and we hit the ball really well,” said Glenwood coach Kurt Schulz.

Harrington threw five strong innings on the hill to earn the win. The junior scattered seven hits and two earned runs to go with his season-high nine strikeouts.

“He threw very well and had a solid outing,” Schulz said.

Clarinda 2, 5 innings

The streak is over.

And Glenwood boys baseball coach Kurt Schulz had one word to describe the feeling after his team’s 12-2 win over Clarinda to end the Rams’ season-opening, six game losing streak.

“Relief,” Schulz said.

“I think we all felt relieved to get it, like ‘It’s about time.’ We’ve lost some close game so it was a nice breather  to get the win and to get it done the way we did.”

The Rams recorded eight hits, scored in every inning and got a solid showing from Michael Radford the mound.
Radford, a junior, allowed four hits and two earned runs while striking out three.

“He threw pretty well,” Schultz said. “He hasn’t had too many starts, he’s thrown mostly in relief. He went out, threw about 90 pitches and had a few issues in the zone but he buckled down, pitched out of some jams and did well.”

Josh Ruth, Eli Bales and Kaden Wray each picked up two hits. Colton Schutte doubled and added three stolen bases.

“They score their two in the first inning and we tied it up in the bottom of the first and then we scored in every inning after that,” Schulz said.
