Structural Problems

Upon the recommendation of a structural engineer, the city of Glenwood has determined a pair of Town Square buildings are unsafe after structural problems were discovered in them forcing the relocations of the two buildings’ tenants.

    The side-by-side buildings, located at 411 Sharp Street and 413 Sharp Street, were built in the late 1800s, and they share a common brick wall between the two properties. The structural  problems arose on July 18 when two I-beams fell from the ceiling in the Keg Creek Saddle and Boot Shop in the 411 building.
    Vicki Felos, who has owned and operated the shop for 18 years, was working in the store at the time. She said the beams caused limited damage to her merchandise but offered a good scare.
    “We thought the whole building was coming down,” said Felos, who leases the storefront. “But if it was going to come down I guess it already would have.”
    The 413 building formerly housed Farm Bureau Financial Services on the main floor but is currently vacant. Residential tenants on the second floor of both properties have also vacated the building.
    Felos said she was told by Eagle Eye Properties, LLC, owners of the two buildings, that workers would be tearing out the old wall brick-by-brick and constructing a new one “from the basement to the roof,” she said.
    “It's a pretty big job. They're shoring it up now so they can work but they have to put a whole new wall in,” Felos said.
    Workers were removing the bricks from the roof portions of the wall as of Monday.
    No timeline was given to Felos on when the work might be completed or when she could return to her shop.
