State Basketball Preview: Glenwood vs. Gilbert

Class 4A Quarterfinals

No. 2 seeded Glenwood (24-0) vs. No. 7 seeded Gilbert (19-3)

3:15 p.m. Tuesday, Wells Fargo Arena

Glenwood’s opening round state tournament opponent will present a challenging contrast in styles. The Rams won by an average of 24 points per game this season with a high-octane, “pace and space” offensive style that saw them finish fourth among all classes in scoring at 72.5 points per game. Gilbert, on the other hand, hangs their hat on defense where they allowed 38.6 points per game this season. Not that the Rams can’t or won’t play defense; they’ve limited opponents to 48.5 points per game while grabbing more than 11 steals per contest.

Offensively, however, is where the Rams excel. They’ve shot 43.8 percent from the field for the year, hit a school-record 190 three-pointers and had seven different players score in double-figures at least once this season. Glenwood is led by its top three scorers: sophomore Madison Camden, junior Elle Scarborough and freshmen Jenna Hopp. Camden led Glenwood in scoring at 17.8 points per game this season while hitting 44-of-105 three-pointers. Hopp chipped in 13.3 points per game and was second on the squad with 13.3 points per game. Scarborough, versatile, do-everything guard poured in 11.2 points per night while leading the team in assists, rebounds and steals.

Much like the Rams, Gilbert is led by a trio of underclassmen. Sophomore Ava Hawthorne is the leading scorer at 16 points per game while juniors Emma Bulman and Nessa Johnson contribute 13.1 and 10 points per game each, respectively.

This could be a game that comes down to who can make shots under the bright lights and high pressure atmosphere at Wells Fargo Arena.
