Rams seventh at Ed Winger Invitational
Glenwood had two wrestlers reach the finals and the Rams finished seventh at the highly competitive Ed Winger Invitational at Urbandale High School Saturday.
In a field filled with ranked teams, Class 3A No. 2 Dowling Catholic won the tournament crown with a score 176. No. 3 ranked Bettendorf was the runner-up with 156. Glenwood compiled 110.5 points for its seventh place showing.
“I thought the kids competed well, that’s one of the toughest tournaments in the state,” said Glenwood coach Tucker Weber. The tournament included five ranked teams in Class 3A in addition to the Class 2A No. 8 ranked Rams.
“Those 3A teams are a little deeper up and down the line up. I think the kids battled and we got six on the podium still so that was pretty good.”
The Rams had six wrestlers earn medals on the day with Mason Koehler (215 pounds) and Joseph Leick (126) both reaching the finals where they both finished second after taking their first losses of the season.
Koehler’s final against Bettendorf’s Lincoln Jipp was a matchup of the top two ranked 215-pounders in Class 2A and 3A, respectively. Jipp (36-0), a University of North Carolina commit, scored a 13-3 major decision over Koehler (33-1).
“It’s two No. 1’s so it was a big match,” Weber said. “We were right in it to the third period and the Jipp kid kind of opened it up a little bit and started to take us down. Mason battled and he knows he’s a beatable kid.”
Koehler admittedly took the loss hard, Weber said. The senior Northern Colorado commit was aiming for undefeated and repeat state championship season. One of those goals remains intact and Weber thinks the loss will only make Koehler better.
“He’s competing and doing his best and this (loss) isn’t going to define as he goes on his way to trying to win another state title,” the coach said. “He was hard on himself later, but we teach losing with class and he did that.”
The Rams’ No 6 ranked Leick (33-1) went 3-0 to reach his final against Council Bluffs Lewis Central’s Weston Porter. Leick lost by technical fall (17-2) in the finals.
The freshman too took his loss hard.
“It’s always hard to take that first loss of the season but think it’s actually good for him because you know you still have things to work and there’s guys out there that are maybe better at the time,” Leick said. “You have time to fix those things.”
Ace Cochrane (106) added a third-place finish, Quinn Lane (113) was fifth, Brody Black (120) was fifth and Drake Buthe (285) was third to round out the Rams’ medal winners.
Buthe beat Class 3A, No. 3 ranked Andrew Hite of Waukee 5-4 to set up a rematch with No. 4 ranked Henry Mohr of Waukee Northwest in the third-place match. Mohr would win again in the second go around, 7-1.
Glenwood is back in action Saturday hosting the Hawkeye 10 Conference Wrestling tournament for the first time in a decade. Matches kickoff at 10 a.m.
